If you still have the old battery see if it can be charged put it back on and try that. If the same thing happens it's not the battery. It's a new problem that happened when you put the new battery on. CK voltage on new battery, check battery fluid, leave battery on charger overnite, then try it. I had a battery that showed full charge then would discharge real fast. Replaced battery and now it works fine. Even a NEW battery can be bad.

Pull the starter, take it apart, give everything a good cleaning, sounds like either the solenoid is hanging or there is a broken return spring

I have problem with starting on 2008 Rotake MC-07-150T with electric start, but it works with kick start, i did test on starter motor and start relay, they still work but it wont start, did i miss thing...

Starter circute on all vehicles has a power wire from there that puts power ONLY to firing the engine.IF this circut is broken,no power to start while cranking.Use a jumper wire to the power(+) side of coil and crank with starter button.Should start straight away. That's your wiring.Only other thing could be plugs are not firing under that light load with electric starter, but WILL fire when kick started.Try a plug change. It's happened with me before.

I know my model is off but i couldnt find my 1974 in there. Anyway i posted earlier that my 1974 just quits on me while riding. I mentioned i replaced my coil and breaker. That is incorrect. What i did...

Your bike should have the large round relay that only has three terminals on it. There are two larger terminals, one for a large red wire from the battery, and one for a green wire going to the small connector on the starter solenoid. The small connection on the relay is for the wire that comes from the start button. The ground is though the body of the relay where it bolts to the bottom of the battery box. It does sound like a breaker is tripping on your bike. Now, someone may have changed the starter relay on your bike in the past. On your Shovel, there is a chrome cover over the coil on the left side of your bike. Make sure that cover is not loose. If it is, it will drop down onto the top electrical connector of the coil and short the white wire out. This will cause the breaker to trip and shut everything on the bike down. If you need a wiring diagram, contact me directly at wd4ity@bellsouth.net and I'll send you one via e-mail as a JPG or GIF picture file.

I have a 75 sportster xlh 1000 kick start and electric the electric was working now its not but kicks over fine how do i fix this

There's a quick test to see if your starter is the problem or something else is causing it. First, it's very important that your bike is in neutral to do this test. If not, the bike is going to lurch forward.

Remove the rubber cover over the end of your starter solenoid. Use and old screwdriver or something and short between the small terminal and the large terminal that the cable from your battery connects to. The starter should kick in and turn the engine over. If it does, the starter is good and your problem is electrical.

If it's electical, there are two places it could be. Underneath the battery tray, there is a starter relay. Again, the bike must be in neutral. Turn the ignition switch on and while holding the starter relay, push the starter button. Do you feel a click? If so, this confirms the wiring between the relay and start button is alright.

Now, you'll need a test light or a volt meter for the next check. On the small terminal of the starter solenoid. connect the test light or the Positive lead of a volt meter, the negative lead of the meter to a good ground. Put the meter function switch in DC volts. 20 volt range. Turn on the ignition and press the starter button. The test light should light up or the meter should read battery voltage. If it does not, your starter relay is bad. If it does, your solenoid needs a repair kit installed in it.

A repair kit is available from aftermarket sources. Most any bike shop can order them for you and they aren't expensive. Disconnect the battery and all the wires on the end on the solenoid. Remove the nuts that were under the wires on all three terminals. Take the two small screws out of either side of the solenoid end cap and remove the cap. Replace the cap with the new parts and the new cap. Be careful when tightening the two screws and the nuts on the terminals as the bakelite end cap cracks very easily. Just snug on the nuts and screws. Reconnect the wires and your starter should work.

If not, let me know.

Good Luck

How do I hotwire my 78 shovel head?

Run a wire from the postive side of the battery to the top side of the coil. There should be two white wires on the top side of the coil and a black wire on the bottom. Once there, you can kick start the bike. If you want to use the electric starter, pop the rubber boot off starter solenoid and jump from the large top lug to the small lug in the middle to engage the starter.

Or, you can purchase an aftermarket switch and change out the switch. You need a 6-lug switch for you 78.

My vauxhall combo battery light keeps coming on and drains battery after few days. tried a new battery and same happened. fizzing sound near fuse box. Any idea what the problem might be?

I might have a similar problem, I brought the van 2001 combo 1.7. Put a new battery on earths have been checked new alternator, still killed the battery, Realised the battery light wasn't coming on when turning ignition, changed the bulb and was fine for about a month then the battery light started flashing. I have a relay (yellow) near the bonnet release which is clicking. I would strongly suggest checking the output of the alternator before considering replacing. www.willstar@gmail.com is my email address if you manage to figure your problem out please let me know as it might help me from pulling my hair out.

Solenoid Faulty or loose connections, short out the solenoid on its contacts and see if this throws on the starter motor, other than that it could be brushes inside the starter motor itself. Good Luck , the eti
