Question about 2003 Honda VF 750 C Magna

1 Answer

Tried to start bike a couple times and it just quit. Checked fuses and they were not blown. Had trouble putting the main fuse back in and not sure which side of the the starter magnetic switch goes to the positive battery cable. Once I get it back together what should I check next?

HI, AS YOU SAID THIS IS A MAGNETIC SWITCH, SO IN THEORY WHEN YOU PRESS THE START BUTTON THE SWITCH SIDE OF THE RELAY OPENS THE CIRCUIT AND ALLOWS 12VOLT DC TO PASS THROUGH TO THE STARTER THERE IS NO CORRECT WAY TO FIT THE CABLE, FIRST FIT THE BATTERY POSS LEAD TO THE RELAY CHECK THE CABLE FITS CORRECTLY AND IS NOT TAUGHT AND DOES NOT RESTRICT ANY OTHER PARTS FROM BEING FITTED,SECONDLY FIT THE STARTER SIDE CABLE TO THE RELAY, THE ABOVE TASK SHOULD BE COMPLETED WITH THE BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE REMOVED FROM THE BATTERY, THUS THE NEG SHOULD BE REPLACED AFTER THE POSS SIDE TO MINIMISE THE RISK OF SHORT CIRCUIT, CHECK BATTERY HAS SUFFICIANT CHARGE. HAVE YOU TRIED BYPASSING THE RELAY BY CONNECTING THE STARTER SIDE AN D THE BATTERY CABLE TOGETHER THIS SHOULD TURN OVER THE ENGINE, WITH THE KEY ON THE BIKE MAY START, IF IT DOES NOT START, SOMETHING MAY BE CLOSING THE CIRCUIT LIKE A SIDE STAND SWITCH, CLUTCH LEVER SWITCH, ENGINE CUT OFF SWITCH,OR AN ALARM IF THE BIKE HAS AN IMOBILISER FITTED, REMEMBER TO MAKE SURE YOUR PROP STAND IS FULLY UP, TRY HOLDING IN THE CLUTCH LEVER, HOPE THIS HELPS

New battery, but no ignition lights come on

Have you checked the main fuse? It's usually a 30amp fuse by itself and if you tried to jump the bike and connected the cables wrong, or accidentally connected the battery cables wrong when you put the new battery in, you may have blown the fuse.

Can a bad voltage regulator cause the main 30 amp fuse to blow?

Usually a bad regulator will only cause problems with charging...
Sounds like you've got a short somewhere in the wiring...I'd start by checking the ignition switch wiring and the connections going into the fuse box.

Bike wont start lights work no clicking, no turn over checked fuses one 15 amp fuse blown bike started right up what gives?

Hi Namvetfxdwg, you have a hard/dead short that is floating, should be easy to find generally they are the easiest. Time to get out your test light and connect it to the power side of the, circuit breaker or the blown fuse receiver, start by tracking the out bound wire towards the ignition switch and beyond if necessary, when the test light quits lighting you are very close to your short. Hi ,
It sounds like you have blown the main fuse . Change the main fuse and before connecting your battery i would run a quick check over the bike to make sure that no wires are earthed . the best way is to take a ohm meter and check that the positive terminal is not in contact with the frame of the bike anywhere . Just put the ohm meter in series ( one terminal to the positive of the bike and the other terminal from the meter to the bike frame of motor . If the meter does not show anything , the fuse is blown or no contact between the positive and the frame/motor If the meter shows some reading , it means that the frame /motor is in contact with the positive of your battery and you need to test the harness ( wiring loom of the bike for any faults .) Best of luck and let me know how you go .

you may have touched the frame when tightening the positive terminal which will blow the main engine fuse.
Sometimes will blow the fuse in the top of the solenoid.

Check your fuses and replace the blown one with the correct size and you will be good to go.

It's scary when your bike dont start just after you get done working on it huh?

It's happened to us all. I'm sure its a fuse.

Sounds like you've either got a blown fuse somewhere or the switch is bad. You'll need a volt meter or test light and a schematic to find the problem. This may sound stupid but make sure the "engine run/stop switch" is in the "run" position. I've seen a lot of people overlook that.

Start tracing the power from the battery, through the switch and then down the line. I think the fuses are under the electrical panel on the left side of the bike. Check those fuses again.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, have you checked the 30 Amps main fuse and its holder clips? It would be integrated with the starter relay. The fuse or the fuse holder may have heat related problem(s) causing it to loose conductivity when hot.The fuse may require replacement even if it tests good and/or the fuse holder would need cleaning / crimping. To locate the starter relay (main fuse), follow the battery cable from the + terminal of the battery.

Please postback results.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

The amp just turned off and won't come back on. fuse blown?

If you can see where the power wiring comes into the amp there has to be a fuse in there somewhere as the fuse is designed to cutoff all power when overloaded
