Question about 1993 Harley Davidson XLH Sportster 883 Hugger
When you say it "cuts out" are you talking about the engine stalls and quits running? If so, I would suspect a fuel problem. Your bike came from the factory with a vacuum operated petcock. 1996 was the first year and they were notorious for giving problems. You'll need to disconnect the vacuum line on the backside of the petcock and use a hand operated vacuum pump to check the petcock to see if it's working properly. When you apply the vacuum, you should get full fuel flow.
If not, you need to drain the tank and remove the petcock. At his point, I'd replace it with a high quality manual petcock like a Pingle. But, if you wish to use your original, take the four screws out of the back of the petcock. Take the plate, spring diaphragm, and needle valve out. Gently stretch the diaphragm while holding it up to the light to look for a hole in it. Replace the diaphragm if necessary.
