Question about Harley Davidson FLSTN- FLSTNI Softail Deluxe Motorcycles

1 Answer

My wife has a 2009 Softtail Delux. When we fill the gas tank and then ride it, gas runs out aroung gas cap onto tank and onto rider. I have tried not to fill it all the way and it still does this. It seems to be getting worse. The bike has less than 1,200 miles on it. Is there a recall on this, or what can be done to fix it? Sincerely, Tom

I don't know if there's a recall on this but it sounds like your gas cap is not screwing all the way down to get a seal. There are right side and left side caps on her bike. The right side is the vent cap. Someone may have put a vented left side cap on her bike. Gas cap swaps or thefts are common because there's no way to secure them. Don't ever buy a nice set of billet caps as they might not be on your bike when you leave it unattended the first time.

Good Luck

When filling the tank, stop filling when the pump clicks off. It sounds like you are overfilling the tank getting gas onto the built in evaporator.

Just stop filing when pump clicks off.

How to clean Carbs after sitting for 1 year

There are products which you can purchase from your Kawasaki dealer which will clean your carb. I suggest against your manually manipulating the parts of the carb in an effort to overcome this trouble.

In the future, I do recommend this procedure. After a ride, fill your fuel tank. Add a proper amount of gasoline stabilizer - get what ever Kawasaki recommends for your motorcycle in your area. Drive around the block to mix the fuel and the stabilizer. When you get to where you will park your bike, keep it running, turn off the fuel valve and let the bike 'run out of gas'. After it cools down, disconnect the battery and/or use a battery maintainer (a small trickle charger which will keep your battery charged while you are away, about $30.00 where I live). Cover with a motorcycle cover available from your dealer. If you are frequently an infrequent rider, always add an appropriate amount of stabilizer after your ride. You should probably make it a point to ride at least 150 miles (a tank full) every 6 months if you can as even stabilized fuel doesn't last forever.

An alternative is you can run the carb dry (as above) then drain the tank.

I have a YTH1848XP Hydrostatic Rider that runs fairly well for about 15 - 20 minutes and then shuts off. Sometimes you can choke it long enough to drive back to garage.

Check the fuel cap, Loosen the cap off and try it, the fuel cap may be plugged or missing pieces. If no air is getting into the tank it will eventually stop the fuel flow to the carburetor and if it sits for awhile you may be able to start it again for another 15 - 20 minutes. It will be worse with a full tank of fuel.

New Lawn mower cutting off after 40min of run time

Sounds like you have found a possible solution to your problem. If the cap is not able to vent, it will create a vacuum. If this happens again, try just loosening the cap and see if the mower will run before filling it up again.
