Question about 1982 Honda VF 750 S

My 1982 Honda v45 will not run without the choke on. It sat in the garage for years with old fuel in the tank. We drained the fuel, changed all the oils, etc and completely REBUILT all 4 carburetors. I bought 4 rebuild kits and everything was replaced. The bike takes a while to turn over (usually drain the battery trying to get it started) and once it runs, the choke must stay on. Any time you turn off the choke it dies. Any time you rev the throttle, it dies. We put in fresh, 93 octane premium gas too. Any suggestions?

The slow jets and adjoining passageways are still dirty. As painful as it may be , take the carbs off and clean the slow circuit again or it will never idle. Double check the fuel pump is working properly and the fuel filter is not plugged. One time it took me four cleanings to get all four carbs working on a Suzuki that sat for five years. Also make sure none of the carburetor boots have developed rips from age.

    ok, dont over look the reeds. gunked up, chipped, broken, or stuck reeds will cause running, starting, and idleing issues.

    i had idling and starting issues due to broken reed gasket stuck in the reed valve and also issues with my bike losing all power and dieing on me while i rode the motorcycle

Hi, James running without air filters is extremely bad for your engine not only does it allow harmful contamination like dirt, water, boulders and small critters into your engine it upsets the delicate air/fuel ratio balance your engine needs to perform to its full potential without sacrificing longevity for openers it will cause your engine to run on the lean side which is an open door invitation to its worst enemy "HEAT" whose only job is to prematurely wear out your engine parts, piston rings and valves are its favorite meal. Black smoke is usually a rich fuel condition that can be caused by faulty spark plugs and or ignition components, a faulty choke qualifies as a usual suspect, it's the white smoke that is the telltale sign of engine oil burning, do yourself and your engine a favor and have a leak down test performed it's a relatively cheap procedure and will allow your engine to tell you if it needs surgery or just TLC and put some air filters back on I recommend K&N. Where should I start on a motorcycle that has been sitting for 20 years?


Hi Nick:
What a great project.
- I'd start with a really thorough clean up.
- You've mentioned the gas. Definitely, drain the tank, hoses, carbs, and clean the carbs. If there's a filter I'd change it.
I wouldn't even try to run it without cleaning the carbs first.
- Replace the battery, oil, and spark plug.
- Engine coolant?
- Tires? I wouldn't worry until I had it running but definitely replace.

remove carbs and rebuild completely, old fuel builds shellac in needle valves and other ports. clean float valves thoroughly, and check choke for proper operation

Got a two year old Honda eu2000I it quit running was not low on oil but changed it anyway,,that didn't help it it cranks but when you take choke off it dies twice it kept running but only fer a min tops


Sound like the fuel delivery system is need of cleaning. If the bike has sat for a long period of time (6 months or more) with fuel in the tank, the fuel will get stale and gum up carb or injectors.

Hi, Gracie and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel cap or fuel tank is not venting properly.
2. Fuel filter clogged.
3. Fuel line pinched or kinked.
4. Vacuum line from the petcock to intake manifold cracked.
5. Float needle and seat sticking.
6. Float level too low.
7. Carburetor bowl vent line clogged/blocked/pinched.
8. Idle adjusting screw set too low.
9. Air/fuel mixture screw set too lean.
10. Idle port, transfer ports, slow air jet clogged.
11. Slow fuel jet clogged.
12. Faulty fuel pump.

Any chance there was any old fuel left in the tank when you started messing with it. Most fuels have ethanol blended into them. After about 2 months ethanol blended fuels go through a phase separation... meaning the ethanol separates from the fuel and starts eating it's way through just about anything made out of rubber. I had an old work chainsaw that sat with a tank full of fuel for about 2 years. When I picked it up the fuel filter was rattling around inside the tank ... the hose had completely dissolved. The short section of fuel line between the tank and carb was like putty. In your case, I would want to make sure all the old fuel was drained out of the lines before tearing into anything else.

You probably have varnish build up in the carburetors, causing restricted air flow, and therefore the engine is running too lean, especially on the right side, and a lean running engine will run hot at the exhaust. It only idles when the choke is on because the choke creates a richer fuel supply. A can or two of commercial fuel cleaner through the fuel supply may get the engine's jet's orifices cleaned out. Otherwise, overhaul the carbs.

Hi, sounds like derty fuel, you will need to check and clean air and fuel filters; also wash your carbretta out with lean fuel. Drain fuel tank and replace with fresh fuel.

Pony only runs with chocke 98% closed


Most likely the carburetor jet is still clogged after sitting for years with fuel in it. Putting injector/carb cleaner in the fuel tank may help, but if not, the jet needs to be soaked some more -- or replaced.

Follow mixing proportions on the label for injector cleaner.
