Question about 1997 Yamaha XV 535 Virago DX

1 Answer

Hello I have a 1997 yamaha Virago 535s with only 900 miles when I now try to start it its starts staight away but when I try to throttle it up it cuts out immediately. On inspection of the float chambers they seem really clean. I am sure it is a simple carb problem any ideas? I do not want to have to remove the carbs if possible! John

Hi, Johndunnifa and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel cap or fuel tank is not venting properly.
2. Fuel filter clogged.
3. Fuel line pinched or kinked.
4. Float needle and seat sticking.
5. Float level too low.
6. Carburetor bowl vent line clogged/blocked/pinched.
7. Idle adjusting screw set too low.
8. Air/fuel mixture screw set too lean.
9. Idle port, transfer ports, slow air jet clogged.
10. Slow fuel jet clogged.
11. Faulty fuel pump.

SOURCE: blocked carb,how to clean

Pretty streight forward. Go to the site below and download a free PDF service manual. The one closest to your model is number 41 from the bottom of the list. It may not be yout exact model but it is the same year and engine size. Very strong chance that the engine and carbs are exactly what you have.

http://www.carlsalter.com/motorcycle-manuals.asp

Drain the carburetors. There should be a screw on the lower side of each carb float bowl. Remove the screw then replace it after the fuel drains. Remove the water trap bowl at the bottom of the petcock, (gas valve). Is there any water or trash in the bowl? Drain a cup of gas from the tank. Is there any water or trash in the cup? Dump it, clean it and re-mount it, (not all bikes have a water trap bowl). Turn the gas back on and wait a minute for the carbs to fill with gas. Install new stock NGK spark plugs and try to start the engine. If the bike doesn't start and run properly then shut off the gas and remove the carburetors from the engine.

FOR EACH CARB > Remove the float bowl and clean the entire
carb with a spray carb cleaner from the auto parts store. Wear protective goggles to avoid getting spray in your eyes. Spray into all the little airways and fittings in the carb. Remove the idle screw and the air screw on the outside throat of the carb and spray into the screw holes as well.
< < READ CLOSELY > >
Be sure to put these two screws back in the same hole they came out of. IMPORTANT > do not tighten these two screws down. Only screw these in until they LIGHTLY seat. Now turn each screw one and one half turns outward. Put the rest of the
carb back together, clean the air filter and install the carb. Let the float bowl fill then start the engine. This process should get you back on the road.

Please rate this solution. Thanks!

SOURCE: Strange thigs about YAMAHA TW 125

Hi
I have been working on my carb today, the pipe from the bottom of the carb should just run down by the bottom of the swinging arm, there should be another pipe from the pipe on the left side of the carb just above the fuel intake which also runs down to the swinging arm and connect to nothing.
Cheers

85 virago 1000 breaks down rpm

I have a 95 yamaha virago with 12,000 miles on it. The tick is normal... The backfiring is not, back pressure is cuz of the drive shaft. I had a similar problem when cracking the throttle at a high rpm. check you plugs for fouling and gap. clean them and regap to around .030. sand inbetween the electrode and outer pin and the outer pin. if the electrode is shot replace them but remember to gap it. should fix your problem. good luck.

You have a varnish buildup in the carb(s). Remove and clean with spray carb cleaner. If needed, remove the slide from the throat of the carb then move the jet needle clip one notch lower. This will richen the low speed fuel mix.
