You must take it to a shop to have the idle speed set. It's set electronically.

No, a idle sensor is an electrically-operated valve which allows air to bypass the throttle plate in a fuel injected engine to regulate idle speed. Hi, My Monster 1100 Evo off the dealer has backfire and also overheats and stalls. Is this normal? What can i do with this problem?


Hi, Gambyl sounds like your timing is retarded the following applies to carbureted also fuel injected models and the usual suspects are:

1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery, 9 volts or lower.

2. Failed alternator/generator and or voltage regulator.

3. Loose or corroded battery terminals and or cables especially the "NEGATIVE" cable, look for loose, corroded, or broken connectors inside the cable harness at "BOTH" ends.

4. Failed main circuit breaker or ignition switch, check for loose connections and continuity.

5. Failed system and or ignition relay, check for continuity.

6. Failed ignition coil, ignition/electronic module.

7. Failed CKP, CPS, CMP, MAP, TPS, or BAS sensor, corroded, loose or broken wire connector pins/sockets.

8. Throttle cables and or idle speed improperly adjusted hot idle speed should be 950 RPM to 1000 RPM.

9. Air/fuel mixture screw improperly adjusted.

10. Water or dirt in the fuel system, carburetor or filter.

11. Restricted, blocked or kinked fuel line.

12. Fuel tank empty.

13. Gas cap is not venting properly or fuel tank venting system blocked.

14. A failed fuel pump, pressure regulator and or fuel injectors.

15. Vacuum line from intake manifold to petcock broken, cracked, or not attached, carburetor vent line plugged.

16. Needle and seat stuck closed in the float bowl.

My 2000 Grand Prix GTP runs great. However, the gas mileage has dropped to maybe 120-130 miles per tank and at idle there is a very strong odor of gas inside and around the car..noticed no drips on...


Following list of possible faults should help:-

Coolant sensor - engine is signaled as being 'cold' all the time, not just at start up, causing ECU to set longer injection cycle

? Low coolant level can prevent sensor being able to detect coolant temperature

? Faulty 'open' thermostat allows coolant to circulate without regulation and perhaps prevents the engine from achieving normal running temperatures.


FPR - broken diaphragm allows fuel to enter the vacuum line and then into the inlet manifold. Additional source of fuel makes the fuel air mix richer causing a faster and lumpy idle.


Vacuum leak - 'high oxygen' signal from O2 sensor causes ECU to set longer injection cycle.


O2 sensor - 'high oxygen' sensor error causes ECU to set longer fuel injection cycle


MAF - 'over reads' in error the amount of air entering causing ECU to set longer fuel injection cycle


IAT - 'under reads' in error the temperature of incoming air causing ECU to set longer fuel injection cycle

that is un adjustable you would have to change the idle postion sensor

You need to adjust the idle speed. Or not. If the bike had been running OK and nothing has been adjusted, the idle jet (carb)needs cleaning out or the MAS/throttle body(injection) needs attention. Other reasons include points (if fitted) and plug gaps, or air filter/scoop clogged.
According to Harley Davidson they have been getting alot of complaints about the idle speed ...heres the link.

ELECTRONIC FUEL INJECTION
Intermittent High Idle

Harley-Davidson2.gif has received reports from dealers that
electronic fuel injection equipped motorcycles were experiencing
intermittent high idle speeds, usually after a hot
restart. Inspection of returned parts has shown that the idle
speed control (ISC) pintle guide ID was undersized, causing
excessive friction between the O-ring on the pintle and
the pintle guide ID. With high ambient temperatures, the
friction became sufficient enough to cause a binding condition
in the ISC, which held the throttle in a high idle position.
Further investigation has revealed this condition could
occur on an unknown number of 1996 vehicles shipped
from York between March and July. The ISC should be replaced
only on those motorcycles that experience the high idle speed problem.
There could be other causes of high idle speed such as
improper throttle/cruise cable adjustment or engine temperature circuit problems.
If you encounter a fuel injected motorcycle with this condition,
connect the Scanalyzer and, with the engine temperature
greater than 284 degrees F., check the Data Monitor menu items for abnormal readings.
Several of the key menu readings should be approximately:
RPM – 1000 RPM
ISC – 0 Steps
ET – > 284 Deg.
TP – 3.2 Deg.
TP – 0.4 v
Inv PW – 3.9 ms
Advance – 15 Deg.
IDLE/WOT – Yes
If the high idle condition occurs after a hot restart, and the
ISC pintle appears to be extended, fax your Scanalyzer
readings, along with a request for a replacement ISC, to
Technical Service at (414) 343-8334. A replacement ISC,
fasteners and lock plate will be sent to your dealership at no charge.
Required Dealer Action
ISC REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE
1. Remove seat, air cleaner assembly and two rear fuel tank mounting bolts.
2. Loosen front fuel tank2.gif mount, then raise and support rear of tank.
3. Standing on the left side of the motorcycle, remove the
two 8 mm ISC fasteners using a 1/4 drive, 12” extension with a swivel and another 4” extension.
4. Continue repair using the appropriate steps on pages
5. Reassemble the motorcycle.

WARNING
After installing seat, pull upward on front of seat to be sure it is locked in position. If seat is loose, it could
shift position during vehicle operation and startle the rider, causing loss of control and personal injury.
WARRANTY PROCEDURE
Use labor code 7490 for idle speed diagnosis and request an additional reimbursement of 0.5 hours for this ISC replacement. File a warranty claim in the normal manner.

Engine idle too high


no, there is no idle screw on them if it is fuel injected. although you could try changing the idle air speed sensor
