Question about 2002 Harley Davidson FLSTF - FLSTFI Fat Boy

1 Answer

My 2005 HD fatboy (EFI) was running and just stopped. It appears to not be getting fuel. I sprayed some into the carb and it started right up but stops after fuel runs out. What are some things I can check to troubleshoot the problem. I've checked the plugs and fuel. V/r Vic

Hi Vmr2254, remove seat and directly behind the battery is a black plastic box. The cover slides up and off revealing the starter relay and the system/fuel pump relay for you injected folks and the various assorted circuit fuses and I'm sorry you can't find the very first and best tool you ever bought for your Harley Davidson. Despair not, for a mere $6.50 you may be able to download another one from the website below and good luck.

Replace the petcock. The rubber diaphragm is ruptured. I'd also bet your fuel mileage dropped cause the ruptured diaphragm is allowing raw fuel to be sucked into the intake manifold.

G'day.
I can't solve this(there are litaraly hundreds of things it could be) BUT I can give you a way to narrow it down a bit.
I'm thinking it may not be running on all cylinders and an easy way to check is to start the bike from cold(do this test in the first few seconds after starting from cold DONT BURN YOURELF),put a bit of spit on your fingers and quickly touch each exhaust header in turn, to see that they are all warming up equally together. This will narrow down if your problem is related to one or more cylinders.
If one or more of the pipes is cold/er than the others then you know which cylinders are causing the problem.
If you find that this is the case- one or more of the headers are cold then.
Remove the spark plugs-Keep in order.Examine the plugs-used plugs tell a story. How do they look?clean?black & sooty? Are they all the same colour?
Re-fit plugs to caps, sit plugs on metal of rocker cover, press starter - cheack for spark on all plugs.DO NOT HOLD OR TOUCH PLUG/CAPS WHILST CRANKING-WARNING - HIGH VOLTAGE- CAN KILL.

I can also suggest a few common problems that bothered the v-stars/viragos.
They were notorious for open circuiting their spark plug caps on either cylinder.Having the coils tested will confirm this. If you have a multi meter let me know & i'll guide you through testing them.

Air leaking at the inlet manifolds-where they bolt to the cylinder-test this by spraying with wd type spray with engine running-if engine revs change-has air leaks(sucking in wd & affecting mixture.)
They even pop the carbies out at the front some times & **** air there.
The inlet manifolds also have hoses & plugs on them(for checking the carbie balance/vacume fuel tap)Check all these for splits & tears-common depending on the condition of the bike/milage/fuel used.
This will not solve your problem but may help you to isolate where your issue lies.

I hope this is somewhat helpful & I'm happy to help if you need after following these suggestions
Kind regards Andrew Porrelli

I hope that this is in some way helpfull.

2000 fatboy not getting gas what could becausing this

That would depend to some degree on where it is not getting fuel. If it is not getting fuel into the induction module or if it is not getting fuel from the tank the fuel line may be damaged/plugged or the shutoff valve/connector could be defective, pull a line and see where fuel might be flowing or plugged up. I cannot remember when Softail got EFI. If you have EFI does the fuel pump work when the ignition is turned on ie is there fuel pressure, if not check the fuel pump fuse and run switch. EFI will shut down the fuel delivery (pump) if the battery voltage is low. If carburetted do you have fuel at the inlet. If so check that the float and needle valve have not jammed and stopped fuel from entering the float bowl.

Speedo steve

Pull any speedometer error codes:

1- Turn Ignition switch to OFF & Run/Stop switch is to Run.
2- Push odometer reset button in & hold.
3- Turn ignition switch to Ignition and release odometer reset button. Background lighting should illuminate, speedometer needle should sweep its full range and indicator lamps (battery, security, low fuel, check engine and cruise) should illuminate. The word "diag" should then appear.
4 - Push the odometer reset button once and you will see the selection menu "PSSPt" with the first P flashing.
5 - Each letter represents an area of the diagnostics module. The module that is flashing is the one you are going to check. To move from one letter (module) to the next, you push the odometer reset button one time. (from P to S to SP to t and back to P, etc.)
P = ECM/ICM (Electronic Control Module [EFI] / Ignition Control Module [Carbureted)
S = TSM/TSSM (Turn Signal/ Turn Signal Security Module)
SP = speedometer
T = tachometer
6 - To get the DTC within an area of diagnostics, push and hold the odometer reset button in for 5 seconds and release. If there are any DTC's the code will be displayed or the word "none" will appear if there are no DTC's. Push the odometer reset button again to view additional codes if they exist.
7 - Record the codes.
8 - If DTC's are not to be cleared, Press and release the odometer reset button. Part number of module will be displayed.
NOTE: To determine if a code is current or historic, clear the displayed code by pushing in and holding the odometer reset button ( longer than 5 seconds) until 'clear' comes up. Release the odometer reset button. Turn OFF the ignition switch. Run your bike and shut it down then recheck the DTC's again by repeating steps 1 to 9. If the code is current it will reappear.
9 - Press and release the odometer reset button to continue to the next module.
10 - Turn Ignition switch to OFF.
On models not equipped with a tachometer "No Rsp" will appear when the tachometer identifier is selected.
"No Rsp" will also appear if the run/off switch is in the off position when doing this procedure.

Now, once you have the error codes, what do they mean?

Cub Cadet has gas, has spark, has air -still won't start/run

Are you pulling the plug to check for wetness after cranking it a few times, WITHOUT using the starting fluid? Also, I would recommend using carb cleaner in place of the starting fluid. Starting fluid runs the engine VERY hot for a brief time and can possibly damage rings, valves, and aluminum parts.

I have a 2002 fatboy and while it rides fine while cruising,it dies when I come to a stop.It wont idle unless I'm on the throttle

If your Fatboy is carb equipped you need to set the idle speed a bit higher. If you're still running the stock carb, remove the air cleaner cover. You'll see a square looking plastic top on the carb. Just to the right (toward the front of the bike) you'll see a screw. This is the idle stop screw. Turn it clockwise to increase the idle speed. Set the idle speed with the engine at full operating temp. It should idle at about 1000 RPM.

If your bike is fuel injected, you'll have to take it to a shop to get the idle speed set as it's done electronically.

Good Luck
Steve

What is the difference between a 2005 efi gas tank and a carburetor model

I believe all 2005 Fat Boys were EFI and no production models w/carb. Generally, the difference between an EFI tank and carb tank is that the EFI has a fuel return port. If you look at the left side bottom you will see what appears to be two fuel lines. One is supply and the other is return from the fuel pump. I believe 1999 was last year of carbed Fat Boys. Left side tank has only one fuel supply port.

Hi Fireman28, and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or damaged battery.
2. Loose, corroded or broken battery cable.
3. Alternator not charging or below normal rates.
4. Failed ignition coil, ignition/electronic module.
5. Failed CKP, CPS, CMP, MAP, TPS, or BAS sensor.
6. Faulty ignition switch.
7. Water or dirt in fuel system, carburetor or filter.
8. Fuel tank vent system plugged or gas cap not venting.
9. Fuel tank empty.
10. Fuel valve vacuum line broken or carburator vent line closed off.
11. Restricted, blocked or kinked fuel line.
12. Failed fuel pump, pressure regulator and or fuel injectors.

You are due for a fuel system cleaning. With the bike sitting, you have gotten plaque build up in the lines, and the carb. Start by removing the lines and soaking in carb cleaner then blow out with compressed air. An even better idea would be to replace the lines because the plaque could loosen and make it to a jet. You will need to replace the inline filter and make sure the screen in your tank is clean and free of debris. The carb will likely need to be removed, taken apart and soaked in carb cleaner as well. It will need to be blown out with compressed air...especially the jets. Be careful not to blow out needle seats unless you have replacements, which would be a good idea as well. Replace the gasket that goes from the carb to the intake to eliminate the possibility of pulling air there. Good Luck! I hope you find this very helpful!
