Question about 2005 Harley Davidson XL 1200 C Sportster Custom

1 Answer

Cpould you please tell me where are the ground wires on 2005 xl 1200c. Also, same bike has 34000 miles all stock, except big ******. started acting like carb problem earlier this year. I am in NW corner of NM and ride alot in Colorado, altitude from 5400 to 12000 feet, has always ran perfect even with altitude variations. also drag race in Tucson and Vegas without a problem. Sometimes it ran perfect and then would start acting up, coughing, sputtering, sometimes die on takeoff. we switched out with another carb, installed new gaskets at intake and carb and it still did the same. suspect electronic problem. it will foul plugs within 5 miles and intermittently will idle at different speeds without manuel adjustment. 1 day I was about 5 miles from home doing errands and it started idling extremely high, I had to kill it to get it in 1st gear at stoplights to get home. Next time I started it seemed to be idling normal. I miss my baby and she misses me! any advice appreciated. I also checked the diag codes on the speedometer, they all read NONE. thanks,,, Bobbie

It sounds like a vacuum leak somewhere. You have a VOES switch on that bike. It's located behind the switch on the left side of the bike usually. There is a vacuum hose that comes from the carb and goes to the VOES switch and the vacuum operated petcock. Check the hose for cracks.

Also, I have seen the vacuum operated petcock do the same thing. Somehow it starts sucking air around the diaphragm creating a vacuum leak. You can take the petcock apart and inspect the diaphragm and replace it if necessary. I'd rather replace it with a high quality manually operated petcock like a Pingle or something.

Good Luck

Steve, thank you for the reply! We will definitely check that also! tonight we installed new gaskets where the carb mounts to intake and 2 where intake goes to heads. It still fouled plugs within a minute of starting and holding a fast idle. :( There are 2 rallies this weekend within 60 miles of us and I not gonna be able to ride! Waaaaah! I'm gonna get cranky! Thanks again, if you have any other advice please respond! Take care friend!

If it's fouling plugs this fast, you should be able to see the fuel going into the carb, literally. I'm assuming you did not have the enricher in the "ON" position. Even with the enricher "ON", it should not have fouled the plugs that quickly. You never mentioned what carb you had on the bike. I'm assuming stock Keihen CV. These are very good carbs. You need a hand held vacuum pump or an auxilliary fuel bottle. You can connect this and watch to see if fuel is running into the carb. If the float level is too high or the needle valve is leaking, the excess fuel should be running out of the overflow tube. You may have a jet that has worked loose. In either event, if the bike is fouling spark plugs that quickly, the exhaust should be black if it's that rich. Contact me directly and I'll send a pic of where the vacuum line is located on the backside of the carb.

How do i change the gearing on a 2005 sportster 1200c

if its chain, try different sprockets, bigger front will give lower rpms ,and pull longer ,and be faster

if you go rear, smaller will lower rpms, and be faster, bigger rear will be quicker but top speed will not be as fast
not sure if there is a speed sensor , that needs to be changed,
i have the same bike, and am wanting the bigger front pully stock is 29 i think , and there is a 30,and a 32 tooth pully for the belt drive models! sweet product , not belt change either!, but like i said i read something about a speed sensor that needs something to correct it

Swap out the stock handlebar. The bike won't start. press on the start button it do nothing. want to check for the ignition fuse but don't know how to get to it. can you help pls

Hi Louie, 1998 and later Sportster models circuit breaker and fuses were located in an electrical bracket behind the starter relay and data link that was mounted behind the left side panel. 1997 and earlier circuit breakers only no fuses were located under the seat and for a free wiring diagram please visit the website below and good luck.Harley Davidson Wiring Diagrams and Schematics

2009 sportster relay switch clicking

Check your battery connections and make sure they are tight where the positive cable attatches to the starter and the negative cable attatches to ground. Sportsters are notorius for this type of problem when the cables are loose.

Trying to swap motor from a 2001 xl 1200c to a 1995 xl 1200 and having trouble with wiring new motor to older bike anyone know the difference?

I have schematics for both year model bikes. If you want more information, you'll have to be more specific as to the exact trouble you're having. There's not that much difference between the two engines. If you want a copy of the schematics, contact me directly and remind me of the year and models of the two bikes.
