Question about 2003 Suzuki VL 1500 Intruder LC

# 1 Cylinder has spark and #2 cylinder doesn't. Where should I start testing. What could be the problem?

Try switching coils. if cylinder with spark changes, you will know you have a bad coil.

Engine keeps backfiring under load motor is an enduro xl 13.5 hp


Need Make/Model/Year/Engine Model/Deck Size, and hours on meter if you have one. A short description of the events preceding the beginning of the problem is also helpful.

Several possibilities:
1. Needs a valve adjustment or a valve job. Start with adjustment.
2. Needs new plugs. Start with new plugs.
3. Shear pin under flywheel is slightly damaged throwing off the timing. Remove flywheel examine shear pin for any damage. Just go ahead and replace it; if it even looks nicked or sliced.
4. Coil, or spark plug wire, is going bad. Very hard to test a coil for weakness without test equipment that the average person doesn't have. Check the first 3 problems, first. If it still backfires, then replace coil.
5. The other thing that causes backfire is fuel mixture too lean. On a small engine this is not usually an adjustment problem. It may be the fuel system/carburetor is dirty or partially clogged. It may also be an air leak in the gaskets of the intake manifold. If nothing else solves the backfire, remove the carburetor and clean or rebuild it. This is the least likely of the options so save it for last.

If compression is good and cylinder leakage is minimal, but a cylinder is misfiring or shows up weak in a power balance test, it indicates a fuel delivery or ignition problem (fouled spark plug or bad plug wire). A power balance, or cylinder balance, test should be run on a twin cylinder engine.

If an engine is hard starting, runs rough, misses or lacks power, run a cylinder balance test to determine if both cylinders are operating to their full potential. You will need an engine tachometer, a spark tester, and an insulated screwdriver.

1. Using the spark tester, with the plugs in, start engine and verify spark is equally good on both cylinders. Remove spark tester.
2. Connect engine tachometer.
3. Run engine at top no load speed. Note rpm.
4. Ground one cylinder spark plug with screwdriver. Note rpm.
5. Ground other cylinder with screwdriver. Note rpm.

The difference in RPM between the cylinders should be less than 75 rpm. If the difference between the two cylinders is greater than 75 rpm, the cylinder with the least rpm loss is the weakest and is a potential problem.

Note: If the spark plugs are new this could be an indication of a weak coil. Of course it could also be compression (rings), or valves.

2003 crv will start but stalls. replaced fuel pump/spark plugs/ignition coils. 2 center spark plugs has a strong spark but 2 far end left and right do not have a spark. pls advice...thxs.


Do a cylinder contribution test
Do a cylinder combustion test
Do a cylinder leak down test-that is the best one to do
Do at least a compression test

Any of those may point you towards
failed valves, that no longer seal,thus
the dropped cylinders & misfire or no fire

#2 cylinder misfiring why?


Usually if you know which cylinder, you check spark--fuel--compression on that cylinder.
You could do cylinder balance test, engine idling, kill each cylinder, one at a time. If you kill a cylinder that has no effect on rpms, that cylinder is dead for some reason, spark--fuel--compression?
I usually kill spark and do it quickly.

you have 12 volts going to the coils... use a test light to see if this power drops out... then you need to find out why... if it doesn't drop out then I would be looking at the pickup coil because this triggers the coil to spark... if this isn't the issue, suspect a bad coil

Number 2 cylinder in my 99 Tahoe 5.7 l missfires


Check to make sure there is spark from the coil. Check to make sure the plug wire is not leaking. Check the spark plug to see if it is worn out, carbon tracked, or damaged. If those all seem good you can try swapping those parts one at a time with another cylinder to see if the misfire follows. If it does replace the part that caused the other cylinder to misfire. If it doesn't than you could try testing or swapping the fuel injectors. Lastly a compression check of that cylinder may not be a bad idea. Have a 1994 Yamaha Virago 750. Just running on rear cylinder. Good compression and fireing.


Have you checked the spark at the high tension lead or at the sparkplug of the front cylinder?
To make sure the plug is in working order take it out, attach it with a wire to the cylinder, connect the HT lead and see if the spark really reaches the gap. if it doesn't or it's weak then the plug is shorted replace it.

Weed trimmer wont start, spark plug has spark starting fluid down the cylinder head and re installed plug still doesnt sputter at all. also sprayed starting fluid into carb. no sputter. again it does have...


The timinmg is preset by the permanent keyed slot built into the inside of the flywheel where it mates with the crankshaft. If the key was broken off, you would get No spark because of the nature of the magneto ignition. Your compression is actually pretty low for a 2 stroke. It should run higher like around 90+. Try this. With plug removed, cover plug hole with thumb and give the pull start a real strong pull. It should push your thumb off of the hole. If it doesn't the compression is too low for the engine to run. Scored piston walls, or cylinder walls could be the problem. Again 60PSI is really low. I would remove the jug and check for piston scoring and cylinder scoring. The engine can be easily rebuilt (but not real cost effective).

WHAT MAKES SPARK PLUGS FLOODED WITH PETROL .ITS GOT SPARK ,


The fuel isnt being burned so it remained liquid & quietly collkected on the spark plugs. Clean & dry the plugs & try a few drops of oil in the cylinders to restore compression. It just may work. If that doesn`t do it then either the plugs are not producing enough spark to ignite the fuel, the cylinder compression is not sufficient for combustion, the spark timing is incorrect, or the air fuel ratio is way off. Your need to determine which is the case and why. You may want to start with a spark tester that will test for sufficient firing voltage ( cheap tester can be bought at any parts supply store for a few dollars). Then check cylinder compression. If the compression is low you should perform a cylinder leak down test to determine why the compression is low. Finally, if you have good spark, good compressoin, and the timing is ok then look for a really big vacuum leak caused by a stuck open EGR valve or a newly ruptured brake booster diaphram.

Hello enjoy42. From the information you have provided I would lean to the weak cylinder coil. Unplug the good spark plug wire & test run the engine on the weak cylinder. You could go to swapping the coils on the cylinders. Check your wiring terminals on the coils. Check with a marine dealer for the correct plug. I owned a 35 Evinrude on a Bass boat & it would out run my buddys 40 Mercury. Good Fishing.
