How can i tell if its the battery or starter thats bad


use a voltmeter to check voltage. battery voltage when off, should be at least 12.6 or better at battery. if less than 12.4 replace battery. when car is running, voltage at battery should be at least. 13.8 to 14.2 or better. if alternator is good and charging. Do you just hear a click, when trying to start car! the click you hear is from the solinoid for the starter. meaning that not enough voltage to turn over starter. if voltage is ok! then check starter. Good-Day! check voltage at battery. for above.

Under voltage would be low output voltage from the generator power head. Verify that the motor is funning at full speed to check the output voltage.

Low battery is telling you that the starting battery has low voltage. This could be because the battery is bad or that the alternator is not charging the battery

I am installinga 4548 inverter. At 4500 watts, it puts out approximately 20 amp per phase. My generater that will feed the charging current for the batteries will put outapproximately 28 amps. Is the...


Let just wait a minute. You have an inverter that is rated at 4500 watts. This spooky. The inverter has a three phase input/three phase output? What is the inverter going to be used for?

Next question. What type of batteries are you using and what is the voltage/current in series or parallel? What will be the total voltage you will producing with the batteries? What is the total current of the batteries.

Another question? What is the voltage of the 28 amps? If it going to dump 28 amps across some batteries that rated at 12 volts and 1400 amp/hrs. For 12 volt batteries with a total of 1400 amps. What you will need approx 14 to 14 1/2 DC and with 28 amps across the batteries for charging these batteries. The batteries will be gone in about 1 hour. Boil all the water out of them. When a battery starts to boil it release water with hydrogen gas (the gas is very explosive and dangerous).

You also don't have a regulation circuit to limit the amount of current depending on the needs of the batteries. Also, you don't have a trickle charger to keep the batteries fully charge when the batteries are idle.

You will also need DC regulated charger that will keep the voltage 2-4 volts above you battery voltage. Without this voltage above the batteries voltage it will not charge those batters. Batteries need to forced to except a charge that why voltage above the source voltage. If you can check the voltage on your car/truck with a 12 volt system. While engine is running the voltage across the battery will be 13.8 to 14.1 volts. Now, the current limiter is the alternator it has a regulator built into it for stabiizing voltage and current went the batteries require more current but it limited by alternator regulator
Now, to get more current out of the alternator the regulator will supply dc voltage to the stator of the alternator generator more current. More dc voltage is supplied by the regulator but the dc voltages is limit to about 24 volts. Another limiting factor is the alternator copper windings diameter---larger diameter more current, small diameter less current. Utilities systems use big mega watts generators. The maxi um dc voltage for these three phase generator would like 500 to 800dc volts for peak to peak output. There is a simpler way of doing this.

There is a ground some were that is causeing the battery not to charge put new selinoid ,new battery,alternater,new key lock cylender check wirers fuses relay switches and battery still wont charge


It sounds like you have done a whole lot of replacing and not much "diagnosing". Did you chech for battery voltage at the alternator? There should be battey voltage at the large Black/Orange wire that is on the B+ terminal of the alternator. This wire should have voltage all the time. If there is no battery voltage, you most likely have a burned fusible link at the starter relay area.
There should also be voltage at the "S" terminal with the ignition on. If there is no voltage, then check for voltage at the "S" terminal of the voltage regulator. If there is no voltage at the "S" terminal on the voltage regulator then check the "I" terminal on the regulator for voltage.

NOTE: The voltage on the "S" terminal should be 1/2 that of the voltage on the "I" terminal.

If there is voltage on the "I" terminal, make sure your voltage regulator is grounded properly to the fender and retest to see if it is charging the battery. If it is still not charging, disconnect the regulator connector and connect a jumper between the "A" and "F" terminals of the connector. Start the engine. The alternator should now be charging the battery at high voltage (usually over 15 volts) If it does, replace your voltage regulator. If it does not, then you need to check your wiring between the voltage regulator and the alternator.

Battery light is on


The battery voltage needs to be checked.Also if battery is very old and not replaced for very long, then just get the battery replaced.Approx battery life is 3 years.If its very old battery then try new battery. But if battery is new and still battery light is on,. then either battery terminals are dirty or not connected properly or the battery voltage is low.Get the battery re charged to proper voltage.The exact battery voltage of charged battery is 12 volts..Re check and confirm with voltmeter. What iz the voltage of the battery


The fully charged battery voltage should be 12 volts.If its low then car will have starting problems.If there is no voltage then car will not start.In case if there is no voltage to the battery,then either is dead/faulty battery or the battery is drained.If it shows no voltage or low voltage,then get you battery charged at local car garage. ------- If its not getting charged at car garage then battery is faulty and it has to be replaced.------------This will help.Thanks . first of all connect your adaptor to the phone,remove the battery and check the battery terminal voltage. If voltage is absent check adaptor voltage at the pin.If no voltage change the adaptor.However if the voltage is presrnt,test voltage of the battery.If below marked level replace battery.if not ,clean battery contact and place into the slot.If after full charge the battery wont last then replace battery.

Just scanned my 1999 300m. It went into safe mode while me wife was driving it home- 2nd gear only. It had a code P1714 and P0700 come up on the scanner. I can't find anything about the P1714.

A battery maintenance system for charging, analyzing, discharging and conditioning of a NiCad battery. The system displays voltage and capacity to determine whether or not a NiCad battery has enough capacity to power equipment for an optimal time period. The system charges the battery using a negative delta voltage method of detecting full charge, while also displaying instantaneous battery voltage. The system also analyzes the battery in a charge, discharge and recharge mode of operation, and during the charge mode the instantaneous voltage is displayed. The discharge mode discharges the battery to one volt per cell while displaying voltage and accumulative capacity alternately. The system also conditions batteries by cycling a battery through three cycles of charging, discharging and a subsequent recharge cycle.
