Question about 2003 kawasaki VN 1500 Vulcan Meanstreak

2 Answers

My meanstreak has Vance and Hines Longshots w/o baffles, and a hypercharger. it has developed a misfiring problem that comes and goes. It appears to get worse as it gets warmer. At times it runs fine, other times it will not even idle.

I have a power commander on the bike. It was on the bike when I purchased it. I put 8000 miles on it, then somehow the PC got out of whack. My local Yamaha mechanic who disconnected the PC for me to try. It ran good for another thousand miles, then started the problem I now have. Do you still think it would be the lack of a power commander?

Most of the time, on new bikes, the computer will handle all of the changes to the engine that come along, but it might not do them all. I would check out the intake. You changed the exhaust, from stock, and never reprogrammed it, but it is running different, try cutting pieces of cardboard to fit in the intake , just over the filter to slow down the air flow, and then if that doesn't do anything, get a fancy airflow filter to let more air in. Anything other than that, I would put the old pipes back on and see if that is the problem. Check it out, hope this helps.

You have a fuel injected motorcycle. When ever you alter the intake or exhaust you have to put a Power Commander on the bike or it will not run correctly. Motorcycle fuel injection systems cannot properly compensate for the changes you made to the intake and exhaust systems on there own. Automotive fuel injection systems will compensate for a much wider range of variables. You Do Not mention if you have added a Power Commander or not. A Power Commander allows you to hook your motorcycle up to a computer and change the performance curve of your CDI box to match your accessories In this case you need to remap for the Hyper charger and the Vance and Hines exhaust. If you already have a Power Commander installed on your motorcycle you should hook it up to your computer and try remapping the system. The program that is currently there is not adequately compensating for the conditions that are causing the misfire. Some times it takes several tries (remapping attempts) to get a machine to benefit from the changes you make. If the bike was purchased already modified and you did not get the computer cables and programs to change your Power Commander, many dealers have the equipment to reset the system for you.

The standard set up can only handle so much change . I'm guessing that the conditions are going beyond the standard set ups ability to compensate. Typically to correct a problem when a power commander is in use , you try a different map to make the bike run properly. May be when the mechanic unhooked the commander, the original system could compensate for the differences. Now the time of year or something else in the environment has changed going past the original systems ability to compensate. Most mechanics I have known would have changed the power curve to compensate, not go back to stock settings. The reason the commander is there is to fix these problems that pop up from making intake and exhaust changes on the original system. The only way the stock setting should work correctly is if you put original air cleaner and exhaust back on.

How to put on Vance &hines longshots on a 2002

Its very simple. I bet if you go on youtube you can find an instructional video on removal and installation. If you find a video of another brand, watch it. 99% of the pipes install exactly the same. I bet there are a total of 6 bolts all together

I'm installing vance and hines longshots on my 98 1100 aero. The rear header is not lining up with the muffler.

Did you leave any mounting bolts loose while you assembled it? They most likely should be left loose until its fully assembled.
Even better, email Vance&Hines and ask them. It is their product and they stand behind it and help you.

Bike dies at idle, have to choke it even when temp is 95. only upgrade on bike I know of is vance and hines longshots

Most likely gummed up jets from sitting for an extended time. remove carbs and clean out jets. see if that solves your problem. before you do this though remove your fuel line after filter and check for adequate fuel flow.

Loud Vance and Hines long shots

Depending on the pipes you purchased, they will be stamped as to whether or not they meet noise requirements. Many if not most aftermarket pipes do not. Sorry.

Question about Vance and Hines quiet baffles

about 3-5db but you must remember db is not a linear scale but logirythmic. basicallyy the baffles will remove the harsh rasp off the pipe and make them deep in sound, when cold they will be as loud as normal but once they have some heat in them they quieten down
