Question about 1993 Harley Davidson XLH Sportster 883 Hugger

1 Answer

I have a 97' 1200 sportster hugger. I put a new battery in it and road it a few times with no problems. It is always parked in the garage. I went to start it the the other day and had a problem. I turned the key on and got all of the normal lights. I pressed the starter button and it just clicked a few times like the battery was low. I checked the battery and it was at full charge. I tried it again and this time I got all of the lights on but nothing from the starter. I turned it off, waited a few mins. and tried it again. The lights came on and then went out. I repeated the process and now there is nothing. I checked the battery and it is ok. Any idea where I should look next?

I'd still take the battery out and take it to an automotive parts house. Ask them to load test the battery. It sounds like the battery has a bad internal connection. A battery is made up of six two-volt cells. The cells are connected together internally and i've seen these connections go bad.

If the battery does test good, make sure all your connections at the battery are good. Make sure the wires at the battery are good. Acid can get inside the insulation of a wire and eat the wire out leaving the insulation intact. Bend the wire a bit and "feel" of it inside the insulation.

Good Luck

I just purchased a 2003 883 100 anniverssary sportster. t was parked for a few years. i change the filter and put new oil, new battery and spark plug. when i started the bike the oil cap blew out and it...

Excess motor oil that blew out the oil cap ,when you've parked for a long time the oil in the tank will drop down in the crankcase, then when you start the motor it will go back in the oil tank and then overflow the oil level...You must have to drain the oil tank again and refill it at the correct oil level....

Remove the battery from a hugger 883 2003

Harley has made a few changes but basically the removal of the battery is pretty much the same as it has been for a long time.

Remove the seat first, one bolt at the rear, lift and pull to the rear. Next, there's a strap that holds the battery top cover on. Take the strap loose and remove the top and side covers. Now, on some later models, there is another strap that holds the battery in. Remove it as well. Disconnect the cables from the terminals. The negative should be disconnected first. Sometimes it's not the easiest to get to but with the proper tools it can be done. Remove the positive cable last when taking the battery out. When reinstalling the battery, always connect the postive first, negative last. Safety first. Good Luck.
