I have the same problem at the moment, a helpfull sole put deisel in my tank and after draining the tank and carb iv put petrol in and got it running through the engine but now its doing the same thing that u have described, it has been stood unused in the freezing english winter for about 2 weeks but that shouldnt afect it too badly, iv charged the battery and still this issue, i am asuming that it is the starter motor/relay. i am going to try replacing this and see if it works, if it sorts the problem then i will let u kno and we can sume that this will sort urs aswell. if not.. im taking a baseball bat to the whole bloody thing cuz its really starting to do my nut in. watch this space

Hi, Tom and the usual suspects are:
1. Ignition Switch not in the "ON" position.
2. Engine Run Switch in the "OFF" position.
3. Discharged battery, needs to be 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
4. Check the battery terminals for damage or corrosion check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
5. Tip over sensor needs a reset.
6. Faulty ignition switch.
7. Faulty starter button.
8. Faulty kickstand or clutch pull in switch/sensor.
9. Starter control circuit, relay, or solenoid faulty.
10. Main fuse or circuit breaker may be blown or faulty.
11. Check for engine trouble codes.

Check battery, check connections corrosion causes bad connection. Double check starter button switch, it may be bad. You may be able to verify this switch by "jumper" bypass of the switch..

Bike won't start, '99 1500 Intruder; changed the battery but it won't turn over, just whirs - help please

There appears to be a problem with the starter .. New battery, 'whir' sound when you press the start button ... I suspect the gear is not engaging. Remove the starter if you can ... Otherwise, this might be a job for the shop.

IV A PROBLEM WITH MY 91 SUZUKI DR 650 I JUST FITTED NEW STARTER CLUTCH AS I THOUGHT THIS WAS MY PROBLEM BUT IT ISNT,WHEN YOU HIT THE START BUTTON TO START THE BIKE THE SPROCKET BEHIND THE FLY DOESNT SEEM...

Sounds like your starter solenoid is not engaging. Try tapping it with a dead blow hammer or a hammer and block of wood (gently! Not to hard!) If it bumps over that is your problem. Also check all connections to solenoid and starter.

The whirring noise you are hearing is your starter motor but your bendix gear is not engaging.

Hope this helps!

Suzuki 1400 intruder wont start.. just clicking noise.

It's most likely the connection to the battery. The screws dont tighten in well and you get the famous clicking....I replaced the stock philips screws with a hex bolt and after two years of trying to solve the problen have been starting everytime for the past year no problems. Another gie away is the intermitant starting problem gets worse when wet.

You need to get a manual, a multimeter, and a few beers and start checking the wiring and switches, and relays.
