Your crankcase pressure is supposed to be vented though the heads. Take your air filter cover and the air filter off. The backing plate is held on by three small screws and two large bolts. These two large bolts are hollow and the vent the crankcase into the air filter as per EPA regulations. Check these and make sure they're open.

Now, this pressure gets to the breater tubes though an umbrella valve in the center section of the rocker box cover. This umbrella could have become brittle and flexing as it should be but I've never seen this.

Check the two large bolts and make sure someone hasn't closed these off to keep oil of the air filter. This is common if someone has changed the air filter assembly.

Good Luck

How can I stop oil from coming from my dipstick?

Depends on the cause.
Blow-by is when oil blows by the rings in the cylinders into the combustion chambers or compression blows by the rings into the crankcase. It can also be caused when too much pressure builds up in the crankcase because of a venting problem.
So blow-by can cause smoke out the tailpipe from oil burning with gasoline, or oil collecting in the air cleaner, or blowing out a seal or other place like your dipstick tube.
If it is caused by worn piston rings, the rings have to be replaced.
If it is a venting problem, you need to open up the vent, like the PCV valve or the air intake port.
If you remove the cap where you add oil and there is a vacuum when the engine is running, the venting system is working. If oil blows out the hole, there is too much pressure in the crankcase.

Oil dipstick breaking

Most likely it is not. There should be a PCV valve that lets the pressure off, if it is bad or missing, that would cause the crank case to build up pressure and blow oil out. First though be sure that there is no leaks in the heads or gasket and that there is not too much oil in the engine. The dipstick tube should not extend all the way into the oil reservoir and let oil out.

1999 HD Softail standard was leaking oil from the side oil tank opening on the side of the bike, what could the cause be ?

Hi Anonymous, the engine oil dipstick on Softail and Sportster models is located on the right hand front side of the oil tank and the Harley Bible says, engine should be at normal operating tempurature, let idle on jiffy stand for two minutes. Shut off engine and hold bike straight up and dipstick all the way in, correct engine oil level will be at the top full mark. Do not overfill oil tank as this will cause engine breathing issues. On Dyna and Touring models The engine oil dipsticks are located on the right front top corner of the transmission and the engine oil pan is underneath the transmission. The engine oil level is checked in the same manner as Softails and Sportsters. If you are having oil carryover or breathing issues (dipstick launch) try running oil level half way between the add and full marks, running the engine at this oil level will not harm normal operation. Good luck

Check oil on 2002 Sportster

Hi Anonymous, the engine oil dipstick on later models unscrews, on earlier models it just pulls out with moderate force, on Softail and Sportster models the dipstick is located on the right hand front side of the oil tank and the Harley Bible says, engine should be at normal operating tempurature, let idle on jiffy stand for two minutes. Shut off engine and hold bike straight up and dipstick all the way in, correct engine oil level will be at the top full mark. Do not overfill oil tank as this will cause engine breathing issues. My ssl5l compressor builds pressure real slow now. Rings or Valves? it did get a little warm while sandblasting lately....

Very rare to have problems with rings. Blow-by would produce high pulsating pressure in the crankcase causing oil to blow out the oil filler plug/ dipstick. If normal crank pressure, suspect problem with valves or gaskets. Remove air filter cover and check for air blowing out of intake or very hot head or air discharge tube. Leaking valves or blown gasket will cause low volume/ low pressure and hot discharge air. Remove the in-tank checkvalve and look for carbon deposits /debris build-up. If the checkvalve and the interior or discharge hose are coated with oil deposits /carbon, most likely problem is valve plate/ gaskets /head. Good luck with your repair.

What fuel and (oil does) 2003 sportster a XL1200C take?

You need engine oil, usually 20 W 50, and primary case oil, 50 weight.
Depends on your Climate. Cold, you can use thinner oil.
You can buy from a Harley Dealer, Genuine brand Harley Davidson Oil.

1989 sportster building pressure in oil tank

A little pressure is normal on the sportster. I have seen where if the oil tank is over full it can blow the dip stick out. Most of us who ride sportsters keep the level showing on the dip stick about midway between the low and full line. Doing this will also help with oil blow by out the air cleaner.
