1985 Honda XR 250 R hard to shift

My 85 Honda xr250 is difficult to shift from first to second gear. All other shifts work fine. Any ideas what the problem might be?

Hi, Doug and the usual suspects are:
1. Clutch not adjusted properly.
2. Primary chaincase overfilled with lubricant.
3. Corners wore off shifter clutch dogs.
4. Shifter return spring bent or broken.
5. Bent shifter rod.
6. A loose shift lever on shifter shaft.
7. Shifter forks sprung.
8. Shifter pawl needs adjusting.
9. Heel/toe shifter coming in contact with the floorboard.
10. Transmission oil too heavy.

It should be 1 down and 5 up. About the 5500rpm at 85... That sounds about right with stock gearing. Let me know if i can help further. Good luck and happy holidays. Jay

Good news > save your money on the clutch. Bad news > Invest it in new shift forks. What you describe is a standard symptom of bent shift forks. Sorry to be the one to tell you this.

1985 honda xr250 blowing air out the carbs

Air blowing back from the carbs is a sign your intake valves are leaking. They do this when there is not enough gap between the valves and the rocker that opens the valves. They need to be set to 0.003 inches when cold and with the piston at top dead center of the compression/power stroke

1985 honda xr250 carburator stuck after setting for 4 years

Hello Ostandfield1,

Dealing with moving parts can be difficult to work with. My first recommendation would be to remove the carb if you havent done so yet. If you have removed it. I would recommend getting carb cleaner. Put the carb in some sort of bucket or container just big enough for the carb to fit in it. This will be something you will want to throw away after. Once the carb is in the container you can then spray it down and leave the carb soaking in there. If that doesnt work, you can also try to soak the carb in container full of gas to help loosen up the moving parts.

There is also a product called PB Blaster that works wonders on stuck parts. Feel free to give that a shot as well.

Good luck

Shifting

Could be as simple as a bent shift shaft.(what your shifter clamps on to) This will cause it to bind and be tough to move. This is really common and likely.

Or you could have damaged shift forks and/or shift drum. Repairing this will require a total tear down of the engine.

Transmission in 85 mercedes 300d shifts fine till it gets to 4th gear...makes a clank noise as it shifts...fluid level is OK...any ideas or suggestions on hoe to solve??

When the transmission-oil level is good and it's only 1 gear and your clutch isn't worn badly (= working normally, not like you can shift without (hardly) clutching), it's probably a bad tension-plate in the gearbox. Solving it means rebuilding the box or getting a replacement, both quite expensive.

1984 Honda XR250 with wrong clutch, I think.

The kick shaft gear, idler gear, and clutch drum gear on the 1985 xr250 and below are smaller tooth gears than 1986 and newer. I have an 85 and an 88. I had to replace the 85 kick gears 3 times. The last time I replaced them I found that the larger gears on the 88 fit as long as you replace only the gears. The kick gear comes off the shaft and the larger tooth gear fits on the shaft. The larger idler gear fits where the smaller tooth idler was and the drum gear comes out and the larger tooth gear will fit there. Or the drum you have with the larger gear will now fit the other gears. This is a better solution than finding another drum with the smaller tooth gear because the smaller tooth gears will not last. I hope this helps.
