You may be experiencing ethanol fuel , it can lower your idle. Use the idle adjust screw on the carburetors to raise the isle enough it wont kill. If the carbs are dirty use a fuel system cleaner in the tank like Chevron Techron to clean the varnish/gum out of the carbs. Backfiring is caused by air leaks in the exhaust system , usually the copper o-rings in the exhaust port where the pipe plugs into the head. Sometimes a bad gasket between the head pipe and the muffler is the cause of the backfire. When exhaust systems are replaced the gaskets are often reused , when they fail you get air leaks that cause popping and backfiring.

I have a 99 road king with a 95 CI new engine. Yesterday after riding for about 80 miles, the bike stopped running. I left from a signal, shifted into 2nd and the engine backfired and shut off. After...

It sounds like a fuel flow restriction somewhere. Sure, it'll start every time and idle for a while but take it down the road a bit. If it quits, I'd suspect that for some reason it's not getting fuel to the engine from the tank. Loosen the fuel cap, the cap vent may be bad. The vented cap the right side tank cap. If it's fuel injected, it could be the fuel pump or something. It sounds like a fuel problem to me.

Good Luck

Running terible

for one thing the cabureter need rebuilding, and the choke repaired, fix that exhaust leak, most of what you describe relates to fuel, also run some combustion cleaner through the engine, its been running rich and there are deposits causin dieseling when you shut it off, all of this is easy for an older mechanic

Just took my VT750 into shop for backfire issues.

I would probably take it back to the mechanic and ask, the high reving could be loose or cracked inlet manifolds or a clamp left loose, this can cause backfire as well as that cylnder runs lean, other causes of back fire are, lean fuel issues, low ignition voltage, leaks in exhaust gasket or exhaust, incorrect valve clearance, just on downshift try manifolds and exhaust first

Back fires everytime i shut it down after

When you finish cutting, bring the engine down to idle for about 30 seconds (some say 5 or 10 seconds but I have found a little longer doesn't hurt anything and sure doesn't scare the heck out of you) before you shut it off, If you shut it down wile it is still turning fast, it will continue to feed fuel into the cylinder and out into the hot muffler where the heat ignites the vapor causing the backfire.

Vn800 running fast on tickover

I am not sure what you mean on the "running fast" statement. If idle speed then turn the idle screw outward to slow down the idle.

The backfire is caused by turning off the ignition key when the bike is at high revs. let it idle down THEN turn it off. The backfire is there because the carb idle circuit is active anytime the piston is in motion. Gas goes into the cylinder as the bike revs down then a hot spot in the exhaust pipe finally ignites the built up gas. There is your backfire.

Is the running fast question answered? Give me more information on the problem if it isn't.

Backfire after shutoff

With the key off and the engine "running down", the idle circuit fuel is still going to into each cylinder then out the exhaust. A hot spot in the exhaust can ignite the unburned fuel creating an explosion, ( backfire ). Let the engine run down to an idle THEN turn the key off.
