You said that you checked the lifters and the rockers and found nothing wrong. Did you pull the head and the cylinder? Did you check the clearance on the piston to cylinder wall? How about tbe piston pin and the rod bushing? Also, check the rear rod for up and down looseness. Usually tappets and rockers make a ticking noise. A clunking noise sounds a lot like a rod noise.

Good luck

I have a 2004 ford f150 making a tapping noies can it be the cam phasers going bad

check oil level ---yes it can but tapping noise can be a lot more reasons --worn oil -low oil pressure--low oil level--rocker loose-worn or damaged lifter-worn damaged valves --timing chain --water pump--pulley --really anything can cause a tapping noise --try to isolate the area or sound and diagnose problem

Ticking sound coming from engine

injectors will tick every time they spray fuel in.if this is a front wheel drive car, sometimes the top motor mount bushings go bad and will clunk when put in reverse.

Lifters noisey

the european ford escort '80-'86 had similar problems with that. problem is the hydraulic lifter cilinder burned engine oil settle inside those cilinders you have to remove the Camshaft you will find them and press them in with a little force and keep it overnight in a bucked of diesel to clean them up .blowdry them and put them back in the engine. check on damages while they are dry. they have to move when you aply pressure with your hands
WARNING when you start the engine because these cilinders are empty.your engine will make a hell of a noise .DON't be ALARMED this will go away in 1 or 2 minutes success

Common problem on these after 100K. Gasket blows between 3&4, walls are to thin. New gasket is only fix and for $90 more do the head. Not a hard job.

Clunking nois

there is a loud non-rythmic crunching/clunking noise. I suspected it would be either the clutch or transmission but I removed the oilpan and visually checked the transmission and oil pump and have completely disassembled the clutch, and none of these areas has any signs of malfunction. I also checked the chain/sprockets and nothing seems to be wrong there. Any ideas? The problem arose after a 600 mile road trip I took, which was the first long trip I had taken on the bike. I had used it for commuting for a few months prior to that. The first to second gear shift had gotten progressively more rough, to the point that sometimes it would not shift until I tried several times. I figured the transmission was having problems (this was my first bike so I had to learn now to use a clutch and not shift roughly), but it passed my visual inspection. The noise sounds as though there is a lose part that is getting tossed around inside the engine by a part that rotates with the engine rpm''s. If anybody has any ideas I would really appreciate it!,Cam Chain, Cam Bearings? Cam chain tensioner? these are likely suspects.,,,
