The wires from the Stator to the Regulator/rectifier do get very hot. Remember that the stator always puts out maximum power and the reg/rect shunts what ever your bike does not use to ground. A very wasteful thing to do, but that is what Suzuki decided to do with most of their models. There is a yahoo email group for these bikes joined through a link at suzukicavalcade.com - try it.

My '86 cavalcade gv1400 with only 27k on it has quit charging. It's running power to grnd only with the key on and dies if I pull the grnd cable off. Will only run of of a charged battery till it runs out....

Check the fuses first, (make sure they are in place and properly seated, No dirty contacts, take each one out). Check the stator next. There are three wires coming out of the rear of the left cover. They are all the same color and size. Unplug this plug and test the stator with an ohmmeter. resistance between any two wires in any direction should be very low (0.2 to 1 ohm). There should be no open leads or shorted (zero ohms) leads. If that is OK, change the regulator/rectifier (It's cheaper and easier).

Can anyone tell me how to remove fairing on right side of 1986 suzuki cavalcade. I need to replace rectifier.

You can get at the Reg/Rect by taking the fairing and dash cover off. You don't have to remove the right side fairing. I have done it this way. Remove the seat, false tank, handlebar/clock adjust buttons cover, vent cover around the steering, right inner fairing cover, windshield, dash cover. Then you have access to the Reg/Rect. The wiring loom for it runs back towards the right speaker, the connectors there split to the Stator and noise filters on the yellow wires. The Yellow wires can also be connected to any of the yellow connectors. You can also join a Cavalcade email group accessed through www.suzukicavalcade.com hope this helps.
