Question about Harley Davidson FLHT Electra Glide Standard Motorcycles

1 Answer

My 2005 HD Electra Glide has recently become hard to hit 2nd gear when shifting up, it catches neutral, sometimes taking 2-3 heel kicks to hit 2nd. The one recent change is i put 20/50 synthetic oil in the trans. not sure if this could be the cause or just coincedense (spelling) Any troubleshooting help would be appreciated.

Hi! The oil has nothing to do with it but I'm pretty sure that the 2nd gearing is pretty worn that when the selector fork hits it, it slides. This will definitely need replacement. Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa!

You will need to tear down the transmission and check the 2nd gearing to confirm if its worn out.

Wont shift into second gear

have you the habit of shifting hard when taking off. it sounds and feels good banging a hard 2nd gear but that some times takes its toll.
could have bent a shifting fork in side the tranny or the powel needs attention hard to say but slamming gears to make it work is only making it worse, if you are not familiar with the inside of your tranny take it to a shop to day before you cause any more damage

bent selector fork on the gearbox, and that would be a full engine strip no doubt about it, any more use of it will cause a screwed gearbox and thats mega money!

get it to a mechanic or buy a haynes/clymer manual to help.

Problem with the shifting

You have bent shift forks. I would replace all the forks in this case. This is a job for the shop. You would not want to tackle it at home. Most guys who do wind up taking a box of parts to the dealer. The repair costs more that way than if you just take them the bike.
Sorry for your problem.

Pleas rate this solution. Thanks!
