Remove the cam chain adjuster, (2 x Allen soc' head cap screws), reset and reinstall...

will need renewed parts , can't repair siezed and broken screws etc , if the clutch is slipping and the auto adjuster has failed i'd expect needs new clutch as well , whats the mileage , service history etc ?

Look for some Youtube videos on this repair. If I remember correctly the links on this chain have different color metal for the spots that the cam tooth goes against. When each side is in the proper tooth the right and left colored links will be on the cam mark and the crank mark should be on the timing TDC mark. Sounds like the slack you describe is wrong and a tooth is off because the tensioner is allowing slack.. You need to slip a tooth one way or the other until the tensioner has room to be in a neutral position.

Need to change timing chain. do i need to remove the head?


Check the vehicle manual for recommended mileage for replacing the timing chain.Locate the timing chain,you will need to replace it if the automatic chain adjuster "also known as the tensioner " is damage or worn.Drain the cooling system and disengage the negative battery cable.Undo the spark plug wires and set the No.1 piston at Top Dead Center ( TDC ) of the compression stroke. Disconnect the engine undercover,vacuum and fuel hoses,harness and connectors,drive belts, power steering reservoir,alternator and bracelet,upper radiator hose and,air doct,front exhaust tube,intake manifold collector supports,collector and exhaust manifold and distributor.Prop up the oil can and take out the front engine mounting,the valve cover and camshaft sprockets,cam bearing caps and camshafts,cylinder head bolts, cam sprocket cover,upper chain tensioner,chain guide and the chain,idler sprocket bolt,cylinder head,intake manifold and cylinder head gasket and the steel oil pan. Place a steel cutter between the steel and aluminum oil pans.Slip the cutter around the the edge of the oil pan and disengage the steel oil pan,baffle plate,oil strainer and front tube. Secure the vehicle on jack stands and place a seal cutter between the oil pan and the cylinder block,slip the cutter around the edge of the oil pan.

Can u adjust the timming chain on a yamaha xj 600 1998 model


The XJ600 has a self adjusting timing chain tensioner, although it's robust enough, like the previous post say's they can stick. To remove the adjuster look at the back of the engine on the cylinder head, the tensioner is there, two bolts hold it on one above and one below. to remove the tensioner there is a spring tensioner in the centre of the unit, undo this with care it hold the pressure spring in place on the plunger. Now remove the retaining bolts very carfully, equal turns on each bolts (do not take one out fully, leaving the other in place fully tight).
Once off the engine DO NOT ROTATE the engine. The tensioner should move freely, although there is a rachet system that locks it out, if it moves out freely then it's fine. To re-fit the tensioner release the tensioner make sure it's adjusted fully inwards and use a fresh gasket. The tensioner only firs one way, if it won't fit don't force it and it can be broken easily. Tighten both retaining bolts evenly and per the removal. Re-fit the tensioning spring and retaining bolt (do not over tighten) the plunger is self adjusting from here.

Xvs 650 dragstar timing chain adjustment. how do you do it?


That engine uses automatic cam chain adjusters. There is no manual over-ride or adjustment. If the cam chain is loose, you need to replace the adjuster at the least and possibly the cam chain and guides.

Cam chains are self adjusting. They have a tensioner that takes up slack as the guides wear and the chain stretches. You may be able to get away with new guides if your chain isn't too stretched. Look for pieces of plastic in the oil, which will signal work guides. It is possible you are hearing the valves rattle, and it would be time for a valve adjustment.

The cam chain tensioner on the R6 is external but it is also automatic. If you are hearing cam chain noise, the tensioner could be getting close to ratcheting up one notch to quiet the chain down. The chain could be stretched enough to make noise but not loose enough to let the tensioner take up the slack yet.
You can loosen the adjuster mounting bolts very slowly until you hear 1, and only 1, click. Then bolt the tensioner back down and start the engine and see if it is noticeably quieter. If it is, leave it alone. If the noise is unchanged, the chain was not loose and the noise is coming from somewhere else.

Go buy a can of PB Blaster and soak the bolt overnight. If that doesn't loosen it then heat the thread area (carefully) with a small propane torch. To prevent this from happening again you should as part of your regular maintenance, take the adjuster bolts out and coat them with anti-seize to prevent electrolysis between the steel bolt and the aluminum swingarm,,,

Im changing head gasket on 1988 mitsu triton 2.6.have the head back on and i had the cam chain wheel under tension but i think it has slipped.i kept the cams and evrything in place nothin has moved cept...


a good idea to keep stuff from slipping is to put zip ties on the chain and cam gears so you dont have to question if it slipped or not,i would recommend finding the tensioner,relieve the tension and see if you can get it back on,it might not have slipped,just when you loosened the gears and took them off,the tensioner went full tension and its probably too much to just force the gears back in place-
