Question about 1999 Yamaha XJR 400

1 Answer

I recently purchased a 1999 yamaha 400 (4 stroke) that's been bored out to 426cc. This is my dilemma. As soon as I give it a little gas during start the over flow poors gas and never really stops pouring. The only way I can get the bike to start is by bumping it in second gear. I'm thinking a sticky float but i'm not real familiar with yamahas i'm a honda guy at heart. Got any suggestions?

Yes, float needle. Carbs are carbs. Take it out and inspect. You can even hook it up with the float bowl open to see what's going on.

01 Yamaha V Star won't start without choke. It had been sitting for months so I drained the old gas, refilled with fresh gas and fuel enzyme, and installed a new battery. Please help-just purchased! thanks

choke opens up the jets just a little more to squirt more fuel into the chamber during warm up, meaning YOU NEED TO USE THE CHOKE TO START YOUR BIKE!!!

1999 Yamaha Kodiak 400 4X4

Is it a fat blue spark, Is it good fuel, have you done any recent work that might have cause this problem. If you have a small bottle that you can put a little bit of fuel into. Remove the spark plug put the fuel into the spark plug hole. install the plug back into the hole, make sure not to spill any fuel , if so clean a dry the fuel. Try to start, if it fires and runs for a bit it is a fuel issue. Just because you have fuel to the carb doesn't mean there aren't problems with the carb. There should be a drain screw on the bottom of the float bowl. remove it , is the clean fuel coming out. this is a good place to start.

Yamaha SR400, Hot starting and fuel overflow

Fuel dripping when idling indicates a worn needle/seat combination in the carbuerettor. Repair requires replacement. Might also be the cause of your hot start problem since the engine floods when fuel pushes up too high in the float chamber. Try turning the fuel valve to the "off" position as soon as you stop after riding. It may prevent excess fuel entering the carbs and so curb flooding.
