Question about Yamaha Road Star Silverado Motorcycles

1 Answer

I have had the bike since 2006 and it ran great love the bike. i bought it used with vance and hines sstraight pipes sounds great! never had a power issue is any gear at any speed i took it in for service in the spring and they replaced the brass jets with stainless due to wear caused by the ethonal in the fuel and now on the op end of 5th gear when running 70/75 it feels if the choke is out or i am hittine the rev limiter, i am using much more fuel and when i was in the mountains in Pa. at elevations over 200o feet i was breaking up bad! i had it back to the shop 3-4 times and on the dyno but they could not repeat the problem it only happens with a load on the road?

If they replaced the jets, did they replace them with the correct size? First off, the metering jets do not wear. Ethanol does not wear jets. If they replaced them, they replaced them to change the mixture. I would have them replace the jets with the original jets. Now, if something is going to wear, it the "needle jet" which isn't really a metering jet. It's the jet that the needle slides in when the slide in the carb goes up and down. It will wear due to the rubbing of the needle against the inside of the jet towards the engine side of the jet. Again, someone it telling you a story. Ethanol will not wear a brass jet. They changed the jet to change the fuel air mixture and now it's not right.

To find out which way it's wrong, try taking the air filter out of the air box and ride the bike at the speeds you have the problem. If the problem gets worse, you are jetted too lean. If he problem gets less severe, you're jetted too rich. By removing the air filter, you're allowing more air to get into the carb leaning the mixture. Now, since at this speed you are not a Wide Open Throttle, you're still running on the needle in the mid-range of the RPM range. You can lean the mixture by lowering the needle and richen the mixture by raising the needle.

What you need to do is take the bike to someone with an Exhaust Gas Analyzer and a Dyno. They should be able to put the load on the bike exactly like it's on the road and check your fuel air mixture at any given RPM. This will tell them if you're too rich or too lean and the RPM range will tell them which jet to change or the needle position to change.

Ethanol does not wear brass jets. The shop screwed up the mixture on your bike, that plain and simple.

Good Luck
Steve

If the problem start after putting Vance & Hines Pipes, then try to sync the carbs, if not possible (meaning turning the sync screw all the way and cant sync them), reJet the carbs with 1up, slow and main Jet.

Back fire with vance hines pipes

Sounds like it is running lean. The ECM must be remapped for a performance breather and/or free flowing pipes. I would use H-D Super Tuner or have a dealer do a digital download to remap the ECM properly for the changes you have obviously made. You may do great harm to your engine if you run it without the mapping change as the VE will be changed and the ECM doe not know what is physically going on with VE if it is not mapped into the ECM

Whats the best after market slip on pipe for both power increase and a nice sound...i have been looking at a very reasonably priced Vance and Hines S4 for just $249?

Vance and hines is always a good choice of pipe, the nice thing about vance and hines is that you can back out the hex bolts on the back of the muffler and repack it when it gets old, or unpack it if you want it louader. Makes it quite tunable. I had a vance and hines 4-1 on my CBR 1000 and I was very satified. The price you are mentioned is good too. The V&E I had on my bike had a good sound at idle and rev and sounded awesome when I tached the bike up.

2003 Honda VT 750 DCB Shadow Spirit. Have Vance

Be sure to properly oil the K&N filter after you've cleaned it. Then verify that the jetting is correct by operating at full throttle (only for as long as safe conditions will allow) then stop the engine and look at the color of the spark plugs. White coloration of the plugs = too lean. Dark spark plugs = too rich. A nice tan or light brown color = perfect.
Running with jetting that's too rich, or too lean, can both cause driveability problems, poor performance and reduced spark plug life.
While you're in there, inspect the spark plug caps for damage, cracking, and signs of electrical 'leakage' (carbon tracking which are conductive, visible lines running down the length of the cap, inside or out). Replace any plug caps that look suspicious. Tip: WD-40 works as a great, non conductive cleaner for plug caps and high tension leads.

Will a Vance & Hines Supersport Exh from a FZR750 work on a 1000

I don't know if separate headers were available, but if you can get the pipes to fit and seal so there is no noisy blow-by, any loss in performance would hardly measure.

Please rate this solution. Thanks!
