U have a gear shaft bearing going out, pull the case apart and check all the bearing, 5th is direct drive so it puts no load on the defective bearing. any bearing could cause this in the tranmission so replace them all while u have it apart

Make sure you have enough oil in the gearbox. When the oil is low, the lower the gear, the higher the whine. I think this will settle it down. Good luck!

It's either the primary drive chain (the one between the clutch and the gearbox) or a bearing in the transmission.
How to test: take out the chain and engage the second, turn the wheel (either by hand or with the help of a starter, or a dyno, or whatever way you can find) and listen to the gearbox. If you can still hear the noise then it must be disassembled and all parts inspected for wear.

You may be revving the engine more than required/upper limit for the gear. In the 5th gear the whining may be less or nil because that is the top gear with no upper limits.

Hi! Try to grease up the chains. The chains may just need some lubrication. Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa!

I stand to be corrected, yes the belt drive may be a little worn and needs to be replaced.

Have you checked the level of gear oil in the transmission? Remove the fill plug and see if oil is up to the hole.

Drain the oil and refill with 18 ounces of fresh oil mixed with 6 ounces of Lucas gear lube and see if that helps. If a transmission is whining, not a lot you can do except rebuild it. Are you sure it's the transmission and not the final drive belt. If the final drive belt is loose, it will rise up and rub on the bottom of the inner primary when you let off on the gas and make a whining noise.

It's normal on the AOD transmissions. Their first gear uses straight cut gear and thus has the whining noise. Gear 2, 3 and 4 are helical gears and thus quiet.

My 05 dodge neon has very loud engine noise and in order for it to get quiet i have to be in 5th gear at a little overe 40 mph,the sound is coming from the drivers side under hook

Hate to say this but your problem is likely a bearing in the transmission. Here are some things to check and tell the transmission shop when calling around for estimates.
The transmission is in first gear 0mph and the clutch pressed is there any noise.
With the transmission in nuetral and the clutch released is there noise, might not be as loud as when driving.
The gears that are noisey and those that are quiet.
You may want to check the fluid level first, and for the correct fluid. If you need transmission repairs get a price and an inspection on the clutch at the same time, it will save you from paying the labor twice if you are going to keep the car.

SOUNDS LIKE A POWER STEERING PUMP NOISE, IF THAT IS NOT IT THEN IT IS THE FRONT PRESSURE PUMP IN THE TRANSMISSION.

Noise in 2004 Ford Mustang V-6, Manual Transmission

Check the rear suspension bushs for looseness wheel could be pulling to and fro when under power. The noise is probably due to the rubber bush completly disintegrated and the axle to body insulation has gone making the body a big megaphone
