Question about 2000 Yamaha DT 125 R

3 Answers

Difficulty with starting. Problem seemed to be intermittent at first. New battery. Changed various spark plugs. Cleaned silencer. Mechanic looked for irregularities in power valve, compression and carburettor. Stater had slightly worn key- renewed. Hope you solve this mystery and thanks.

Thanks Rocketman, Shall look into it and keep you posted.

Hi again rackitman, the problem persists even when the fuel **** had been kept closed. When I did, with difficulty start the engine, the machine worked fine throught the run then fails to start once the engine had been shut off.

Thanks. The battery is new and well connected. Carburettor cleaned. I'm wondering whether the CDI ever gives intermittent problems, keeping in mind that it's only the starting that is difficult. Once the engine starts it works fine for as long as I shut it off. Then the problem returns.

Thanks darknesssusp, There should be ample charge, since the first thing I do is to try the horn and it blazes away loudly. We tried another coil from another bike and I shall ask whether other high tension wires were also tried.
Now I'm suspecting the stater and shall enquire whether a diagnostic tool exists before I start to change expensive parts.

Hi Rokitman. Still stuck. Time to start changing parts I guess. I need to know the resistance of the source coil in the stater. Should be in the workshop manual which I don’t have. This coil may be playing tricks.

Check/change your ignition coil. It's probably shorting internally, and not developing a strong enough spark to ignite the mixture right away.

Has the mechanic checked for proper charging system function? Often, the charging system will degrade slightly due to wear/age/etc. and this will mean there isn't enough charge available to power the starter, ignition, and any accessories on a bike. This is especially true when you consider "barebones" bikes that weren't intended to have any sort of lighting, etc... and have especially small output from OE.

Hello. Make sure your battery is fully charged and that the battery cable contacts are clean and tight. Make sure you have a clean air filter. Go to most any auto parts store and get a bottle of a fuel additive called Seafoam. Add it to your fuel tank. This will remove whatever gunk you have in the carb or injectors. All of these steps should solve your problem. J.

This sounds like the same problem that I had with my bike and it turned out to be a seal in the carb was leaking and allowing fuel to leak into the cylinder while sitting, wasn't enough to figure out quickly but enough to make it hard to start..

The CDI can do it but usually it is the connectors leading to the cdi and what you can do is clean them with an electric cleaning spray and apply a small amount of dielectric grease to each conector.

Kawasaki FH641V riding lawn mower engine not starting I removed, cleaned and reinstalled carb. Installed new spark plugs, and one bad coil, cleaned the air filter, changed fuel lines and in line filter,...

You can have current reach the coil but if it is open or if there is an internal short it may also produce a weak or no spark at all. High voltage has to come out of there and it has to be distributed to the various plugs. You have more than one plug so check the distributor out also.

My 1974 Yamaha 250 Enduro wont start I have cleaned and redone the carb. I have changed the coil pack and spark plug. Any suggestions will help Im not a mechanic by any means so not sure where to start...

you need good compression ( at least 90 psi , kicking it with the throttle open) , good crankshaft seals for sucking the fuel/air into the botton end, proper point gap and timing set for spark ( spark should be big and fat,if not the source coil is weak,, this is a flywheel magnito ignition and it needs no battery to fire the plug) if you clean the carb, make sure you also clean the choke pickup tube or it wont choke. also make sure you have the slide installed in the right direction ( not backwards and the idle is not set too high at first...compression/****-good spark at the right time-proper fuel/air ratio and it will run

run an inline fuel guage in the fuel line with a clear line, look for bubbles, do this witha an inline spark detector, that should tell you wether its fuel or spark shut down, either of these will not give you a code, i have spent many a day on intermittents, sometimes you just have to go back to baasics

Scooter wont start

The ignition timing may have been disturbed,or if it is equipped with a carburettor, the mixture setting may have been disturbed,or the carb.jet may be blocked by dirt in the fuel or the spark plug may be faulty .get all these checked first .
