This is normal. A slider gear engages into rectangular slots in a drive gear. The slots allow the dogs easy engagement into gear. The knock you are hearing is the engaging dogs striking each end of the driven gear. Please rate my answer, thanks.

What would make the back wheel of a scooter seize up? and how do you go about making it free

Hi, Larry the starter drive/Bendix/clutch is a mechanical gear driven component that engages the clutch pack ring gear to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed, it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced.

Take off back wheels

Most scooter to take the wheels off is just a nut in the middle of the wheel with either a 17mm or 19mm socket. Leave the scooter on the ground and undo in an anti-clockwise direction. Some may have a tab washer which you will need to knock back flush in order to rotate the nut. Once nut is removed, jack up scooter on a block of wood so the wheel is off the ground and pull wheel off shaft.
WD-40 may need to be used and worked in between wheel and shaft on an old scooter as they tend to seize on.

Scooter won't move when forward/reverse engaged.

Engage the freewheel lever
- allows you to operate the mobility equipment with the standard controls.
Disengage the freewheel lever - This unlocks the unit and allows the wheels to spin freely. You can easy push the equipment without power. This is especially helpful if you run out of battery power and need assistance.

I have a celebrity scooter that powers up great and every thing seems to operate properly except it will not go forward or backward. It makes no sound when engaging thumb switch.

Make sure the drive lever/freewheel brake is engaged. Usually it is on the lower back bottom of the scooter or check your owner's manual.
Good luck!

Sounds like you have a bad throttle pot. You`ll need to check the resistance on it or take it to a dealer.
