Question about Harley Davidson FLHT Electra Glide Standard Motorcycles

4 Answers

Dear, I just rebuilt a 1960 shovle FLH Harley Davidson ' police version '. Problem : many misfires ( or detonatations, explosions ) from exhaust. Already changed carb and ignition. Also all valves. But no result. What could it be? Thanks and regards, Marc. vanpo@skynet.be

Is the carb and valves adjusted properly? Do you have the correct plug gap? Are all the gaskets good? Those are usually the pain causes

If you changed the carbs out, and the valves? You have a timing problem. It must be off 180 degrees. You can take the distributor cover off, points, and pull the plugs, turn the engine till the front piston is top, check the position of the points, or look for the timing mark, I don't know where yours is, mine was on the plate. But, you have to make sure the points are firing, make a note of it, turn the engine till it comes up again, check the mark, check the points, move the points to the firing position, It should be right. If it comes up the second time with the pointer being 180 degrees off, it is on the exhaust stroke, check the valves, no pressure on the lifter, they have to be closed on the firing stroke, Check it out.

Hi! You may have fuel flooding which can result to misfires. Try to replace the plug wires and spark plugs. Will have better fuel burning and can get rid of the problem. Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa!

Have you check the vacuum lines? You may have vacuum leak and needs to replace worn vacuum hoses.

All points to a bad distribution timing. Take the engine apart again and redo the entire timing - valves and ignition. BTW on such an old bike the timing marks might be off (used parts, parts from another bikes, etc.) so redo the timings by hand, one at a time. You will need a rotating angle disk and a depth gage to measure the piston's and the valve's pusher position. Once you are absolutely sure the valve timings are perfect, adjust the ignition.
