Question about Yamaha TT-R 250 Motorcycles

1 Answer

Hi I just picked up an Yamaha TT250 1981 model which has a loud ticking/tapping noise in the top end. I have read some forums that suggest it may be a worn rocker or cam problem. Only chose bike model from list below because TT250 not listed

The noise you hear is from an out of spec rocker.

The good news
This part only cost $40 USD.

The bad news
Yamaha only made this between 1980 to 1982.
There is one in eBay (USA).

I attached a picture for rocker and part interchange information for your reference.

Part Number 52R-12151-00 became 99999-01443
FITS Following Models:
1980-82 SR250 and Exciter
1980-83 XT250
1980-82 TT250

==============

When you deal with bike with little to no repair history, the first thing you should do is an oil and filter change.

A bad seller will use a heavier weight oil to mask the engine noise.

The total oil capacity for oil + gearbox is around 1.5 liter.

I recommend you to use synthetic oil like Amsoil 10W30 motorcycle oil

DO NOT START unless you has a torque wrench and upper gasket.

DO NOT drop the timing change.

Check for worn rings and piston.

    Check out this Youtube video.

Loud tapping noise from carberator

Is the ticking coming from the mixture control solenoid. Unplug the two pin connector on top of the carb and see if the ticking stops. If it does then plug it back in and leave it, it is normal that it clicks. It is the carb switching from lean to rich and back again.
