Question about Yamaha FZR 250 Motorcycles

My Bike is leaking fuel slowly from somewhere near the bottom of the fuel tank? What the problem likely to be? I don't know anything about mechanics, could I fix it myself with you advice?

Finding fuel leak options with very little fuel in tank, leaks with addition of $5 worth of fuel?


Surely you can see the fuel on the outside of the
fuel tank or a rusted fuel tube under it

You should be able to find that issue in 10 minutes
IF you get under it

That is only 2 gallons added at a time

Wouldn't you think the fuel tank is the issue,if
it leaks without the motor running

Now you also know we can not guess from here

Where does the small tube from bottom of float bowl go


First, where does it come from. It is the overflow for the carb. Comes from a tube inside the carb. Where it goes; basically out the bottom of the bike. It does not connect to anything. just routes down the frame and out the bottom of the bike. It allows any overflow fuel to not get all over your bike.

Why am I leaking gas from somewhere under my tank?


Well...A fuel line may have split due to heat, Or a bad clamp on the filter or fuel valve, If it carbureted, then You may have a leaky fuel bowl gasket/ Stuck float/bad float/or a out of adjustment float.

I have a 2000 yamaha R1 and when i stared it up it leak gas i don't know much about bike what can i do


First you can look see if any fuel lines have become perrished or simply fallen off, lift up the tank and start up the bike the fuel tap is located at the rear of the tank and can be turned to off position. Try locate where the fuel is leaking, if it is coming fro. The carb breather tubes, or the overflow at the bottom of the carb float bowls if you are not up to scratch with the job you may want to employ someone to remove the carbs for you for cleaning-servicing

There is petrol leaking from the overflow on my zxr 400, should this overflow be connected to anything else via tube ....?


No, the overflow tube should dump the fuel out the bottom of the bike.

Possible solutions (?): 1: Don't over fill the tank. 2: Check for corrosion in the tank overflow tube.

My 1974 kawasaki ke 125 is leaking gas out the bottom of the engine. what is wrong with it?


Several things could be wrong. First, the fuel petcock (valve) at the bottom of the gas tank should be turned off when the bike is not being ridden. Also, it is possible the valve may not be fully shutting off the gas. This can allow the carb to overflow and leak gas. A stuck open or punctured float in the carb bowl can cause overflow. The float should be light as a feather and have nothing inside it but air. Is the carb securely mounted?

Check for cracked fuel hose or bad connections at the tank and carb. Is the fuel valve body leaking gas where it mounts to the tank? Heck, with the bike being 36 years old the tank may be leaking at a weld or due to rust through. I wish I could work on your bike. The older bikes are more fun to work on than the newer bikes. 02 DYNA WIDE GLIDE WON'T IDLE UNLESS CHOKE IS OUT. POOR THROTTLE RESPONE AND SOME POPING IT SEEMS THE THROTTLE RESPONE IS POOR AT IDLING. ONCE OUT OF FIRST GEAR IT RUNS WELL. THROTTLE TAKES TIME COMMING...


Sounds like you've got a vacuum leak somewhere. Either your intake seals or the carb seal is leaking air. Have you replaced the air filter housing? On the Evolution and later engines, the carb is designed as a "spigot seal" type carb. In other words, it just pushes into a seal instead of bolting on like the older carbs did. This means that the carb has to be aligned correctly or an air leak can occur around the seal. The air filter assembly is what holds the carb. into the seal and aligns the carb.

If you haven't messed with the air filter assembly there is one other thing that I've seen cause this problem. Your bike has two vacuum operated devices on it. One is the VOES switch and the other is the fuel petcock. The VOES switch is part of th igniton system and the petcock is the fuel valve on the fuel tank. The vacuum comes from either the carb or the intake manifold and is routed to the devices by a vacuum hose. Make sure this hose in connected to all three locations and has no holes in it. The vacuum hose to the petcock is on the backside of the petcock and the VOES is located on the bottom of the frame top tube under the fuel tank near the carb.

I have seen the vacuum operated petcock cause a vacuum leak in at least one occasion. Normally, when they go bad they just shut the fuel off to the carb and the engine won't run. But, I did have one that caused a severe vacuum leak and the bike acted exactly like you're describing. I took the petcock out of the tank. Drain the fuel first, not easy to do with the petcock being vacuum operated. I got a large funnel and held it under the petcock while I slowly unscrewed it. Once you have the petcock out, you'll see four small screws on the back side of it where the vacuum hose connects. Remove the screws and check the diagraphm behind the plate. Be careful, there is a small spring behind the plate. Take the petcock apart carefully so you can remember how to properly reassemble it.

Personally, I would eliminate the vacuum operated petcock and replace it with a high quality manual operated petcock. Like I said earlier, if they malfunction they usually shut the fuel off to the engine. There you are, a full tank of fuel but none to the engine. I'd replace it with an original Harley unit for a 1995 or earlier bike or a high quality aftermarket unit like a Pingle.

You need to find this problem before you ride the bike too much. The lean mixture resulting from a vacuum leak will cause the engine to run very hot.

If you're building up vacuum or pressure in the fuel tank, your vent line is pinched or plugged. It is a rubber hose that comes off the fuel tank, usually runs down the right side and discharges vented air out the bottom somewhere.

Hi,

Have not worked on an HD but my thoughts and additional guesses would be:
1. fuel contamination (water at bottom of tank);
2. primary pump (in my case it was inside the fuel tank & might not be present in your bike);
3. fuel lines & clamps to & from primary pump or to the carbs;
4. in line filters;
5. vacuum controlled fuel valve (oppose to the usual manual petcock)
6. if it were the MAP sensor, bike wouldn't even run a block away + idling would be rough;
7. by chance are you using a Power Commander?

Also your post "bike will start and run fine for a few blocks then die" indicates that indeed fuel got into the carbs before but not when running meaning the bike used what was inside the bowl and was not replenished.  Alternately, the fuel flow to the carbs might not be sufficient and there is a leak or a blockage somewhere.

As said might not work for your bike but has come across some of the above on numerous occasions.
