Question about Honda VT 750 Shadow Motorcycles

When trying to start my 1983 Honda 750 v-twin, it sounds like gears grinding, it just started doing this, what could it be if not the starter? I had a friend take the starter out, he said it was still good, we put it back but with no better results.

The starter clutch is the problem. It is located on the back side of the alternator rotor. You need a special puller to remove the rotor without breaking it. Once you get the rotor off the starter clutch is bolted to the back of it.

The whirling your describing sounds like your describing a whirling starter that's not turning the motor, the starter is just spinning internally. Bad starter if so. Check the teeth on the flywheel if u pull the starter too.

Bike was starting fine but after about 30 minutes it just sounds like the starter is spinning but not turning the bike over plz help.... 2005 suzuki katana 750

Most starters have a plastic gear on them. You may have some broken gear teeth. This would allow the starter to spin yet not engage the engine flywheel.

Hi Frank and the usual suspects are:
1. Ignition switch not in the "ON" position.
2. Engine run switch in the "OFF" position.
3. Discharged battery, loose, corroded or broken battery cables, especially the "NEGATIVE" cable at both ends (solenoid chatters).
4. Bank angle sensor tripped and ignition/light key switch not cycled to the "OFF" position and then back to the "ON" position.
5. Security alarm needs a reset.
6. Starter control circuit, relay, or solenoid faulty.
7. Electric starter shaft pinion gear is not engaging or over-running starter clutch slipping.

1983 Honda Shadow 750 that backfires once in awhile when starting. Any ideas?

I have a 83 Sabre V45 which had the same problem. I removed the top covers of all carburators, and found 1 diaphragm had a hole in it. I replaced it, and everything worked fine. Hope this helps.

Hi, Anonymous the starter clutch is a separate mechanical gear driven component that is activated by the starter motor, it engages the clutch pack gear or the flywheel gear to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one "ONE DIRECTION" only and once the engine starts allows the gear to free spin with engine rotation. If the starter gear free spins in "BOTH DIRECTIONS" then the drive gear has failed, it might be serviceable on some models but usually needs to be replaced.

Hi i have 1995 honda vfr 750 cc it would start sometimes it wont it would just sound like grinding i have replace the selinoid stater motor was check at the dealer said is perfect working i have bought new...

If your starter motor always spins but the motor only cranks over intermittently, you have a bad starter clutch. Replace the large starter gear and the three rollers in the one way clutch and the motor should turn over every time you hit the starter button. Parts #3 & #14 .

I have a 1983 Land Cruiser and when I start it, there is a terrible grinding, rattling noise. It starts up strong, and I replaced the starter 1 1/2 years ago. Any suggestions as to what else I might look...

Before you really panic, check the mounting bolts on the starter. I feel positive you will find them lose! Changing the ring gear is last resorte. For now let's just check the bolts. OK?

The hedlight goes out when you push the start butten and wont come back on. on a 1983 honda shadow 750. I cant find the right make, model and year in the choicesso I picked the one closest to the year.

When you push the starter button, it performs two functions at the same time; spins the starter over, and turns the headlight off. If the headlight fails to come back on when the starter button is released, then you've got a bad starter switch. Honda does not sell parts for repairing them, so your only option is to replace the entire right hand handlebar switch assembly.
Before speding the considerable amount of cash required for a new switch, first try spraying some electrical contact cleaner in it. The best way to do this is to first remove the screws that hold the upper and lower halves together and open it up for better access to the starter button contacts.

1983 Honda Nighthawk 650 stopped starting

Sounds like the starter solenoid went bad. Turn the key on, Make sure it in N. Take a screwdriver and jump the terminals on the solenoid and see if it turns the starter over and starts the bike. If it does then the solenoid needs replaced.

Problems Starting my 2009 Honda CRV

Your post interested me, as I just purchased the same vehicle lasts month. The grinding noise while attempting to start the CRV sounds like like a problem with the starter 'clashing ' with the flywheel. When you turn the key to start there is , a small gear in the starter on a shaft that advances (moves down the shaft) and meshes with the flywheel (which is a large 'gear'). When they mesh together, the starter gear will spin, and turn the flywheel, which 'cranks' the engine over to start. When a car is old, you can experience a loud grinding noise, as the wear and tear can cause the gears to clash, not mesh smoothly. Since this is an '09, that of course isn't a wear and tear issue, something was not tightened during assembly, or is defective. You MUST bring it to the dealer, to establish that there is a problem, even if they deny it. To continue to drive it could cause damage to components (actually driving it is probably ok, it's the starting it that will cause damage). So, insist that they check it out, you may be surprised by their desire to fix it, and have a happy customer to advertise their cooperation and quick fix of the problem. Hondas are great cars, hopefully this is a rare minor assembly or defective part glitch that will be quickly fixed. Keep me posted as to your visit to the dealer. Remember that you can bring it to any Honda dealer, although I would start with the one where I purchased it. The car is under warranty, get them to fix it, and enjoy your new car.
