Question about 2006 Suzuki GSX 600 F (Katana)

1 Answer

Suzuki gsx600f year 2006 bike has 730 miles on it, i've been storing it for a friend who has not had it running for almost year when i got it this spring, this spring i siphoned out gas put new in it, been starting it up twice a month let it run for 10-15 minutes and once in awhile take it for ride a couple mile ride. seems like it has been running fine, but today I rode it 19 miles, bike seem to run fine, but when i went to start it back up after stopping for an hour or so, it would crank over but will not start, gas tank is still almost full, think fuel pump quit working but not sure, any suggestions?

Hi, Paul_hari and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel tank empty.
2. The fuel tank has old dead gas.
3. Fuel tank bottom contaminated with ethanol sludge, dirt, water, rust, etc.
4. Fuel supply valve/petcock turned off.
5. Fouled spark plugs.
6. Engine flooded as a result of overuse of the enrichner.
7. Vacuum hose to the fuel supply valve/petcock disconnected, broken, cracked, or pinched.
8. Fuel valve/petcock or filter clogged.
9. Fuel line to carburetor or throttle body pinched, kinked or blocked.
10. Carburetor float stuck.
11. Fuel injectors clogged.
12. A severely discharged or damaged battery, you need 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
13. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
14. Loose or corroded wire connection at the coil or plug between ignition sensor and ECM module.
15. Spark plug cables in bad condition and shorting check for spark leakage in the dark, cable connections loose, or connected to the wrong cylinders.
16. Ignition timing incorrect due to a faulty ignition coil, ignition module or MAP, CMP, CKP, O2, TPS, ETP, IAC sensors.
17. Faulty neutral, clutch lever, or kickstand safety switch.
18. Faulty fuel pump or fuse or relay.
19. A stuck bent or burnt valve.
20. Tilt sensor needs a reset.
21. Security system not disarming alarm needs a reset.
22. Check for engine trouble codes.

Remove the carb , dissemble it and clean the varnish out. After so long in storage I am surprised it runs at all. Remove the petcock, ( gas valve ),water trap and clean it out. Next let one cup of gas flow into a container. Any water or rust in the bottom of the container? If any rust was in the water trap or the container then purchase an inline fuel filter to eliminate the rust getting into the carb.

If cleaning the carb yourself does not do the trick then take it to the dealer and have them clean it and install a carb kit. This should get you back on the road.

Post a comment to let me know how it goes. Then rate the solution > Hopefully it's a "FixYa" rating!

There may not be an in-line fuel filter on the bike. Most bikes don't come with them. Yes, the fuel petcock has two screen filters on one pipe and they can get clogged up. Remove the tank then remove the petcock and clean it. The gas in the tank should be dumped into a clear plastic storage bin so that you can see if there is any water in the gas as well as rust and trash. Your bike is 15 years old and the inside of the tank may be rusty. If so, Google kreem fuel tank liner “ or go to

www.http://www.4secondsflat.com/Fuel_Tank_Sealer.html

This will end the rust problem. Go ahead an install an in-line fuel filter. There is a drain plug on the lower left side of each carb. Drain each carb into a clear container and look for water and trash. You may need to clean the carbs but hold off to see if the other stuff fixes the problem.

Go to the site below where you can see a parts diagram for your specific bike. You will select the actual brand, year, model, etc., once you go to the site. Part numbers and prices are also shown. You can order parts from this site. In the event no price is shown on a particular part, the part is not in stock.

How Does the 2004 GSX600f differ from the 2000 model? I have a manual 98-02 from my last bike but can't find one for my newer one

Hi, Barry the vast majority of service, parts, and owners manuals on the internet are "FREE" to download and all service manuals contain wiring diagrams in the back pages. The rest usually charge a modest fee around $10 sometimes more and there is a handful of obscure, rare, obsolete, and very old models that are no longer or never were available, then there is eBay where you may be able to find what you need at a very high price because of its age and rarity. Most of the "FREE" manuals will cover your exact make, model, and year otherwise one will be provided that comes as close as possible to your bike and will have most of the same info that an exact manual would have. To download your manual please click on the links below. Good luck and have a nice day.

It's likely a broken piston ring, worn out piston rings, or faulty valve seal(s)... However, it could easily be some other thing... like crankcase ventilation valves, lines or hoses...cracked block... I know.. I'm not being much help... but, a good mechanic can probably zero in on the problem...

Hi, Timothy_towd "ABSOLUTELY" you need to go through all 4 carbs set the proper float height and then have them synced for this scenario you will need your service/owners manual if you can't find the first and best tool you ever bought for your Yamaha, despair not, for a mere zero $0 you can download another one. I would suggest picking up a Haynes Service and repair manual for the suzuki GSX600F. It has been an invaluable tool for me fixing up my katana. It goes through checking your speed sensor, cable, and also shows how to change everything out.

Oil blowing out of exhaust

Run it out, The oil has collect in the exhaust media and baffles. Iver fill can cause this proble. As long as it has oil in it, run it out (burn it out) If the oil is low when you ck it, and that should be often, Then note it. Valve guide wear is progressive and the engine would smoke. Keep the oil level proper and take it on a mellow ride, no hard throttling. You should see an improvement after about 20 miles down the freewayat 60. Just stay alertand pay attention to the sound of the motor. Good luck and let me know when you get back.

most likely you have a CDI box failure. the easiest way to find out tho is take it to a dealer and have them run a diagnostic test, usually around 60$ find out whats wrong and depending on the problem have them fix it or tackle the issue yourself.

The battery LOOKS new. Your battery is three years old. Batteries age quickly. They normally last 2 to 2-1/2 years. Just get a new battery and ride the bike more frequently. In lieu of that, get a cheap 1amp or 2amp trickle charger and charge the battery for two hours once a week. Be sure to keep water over the plates in each cell.
