Question about Harley Davidson FLSTCI Heritage Classic Motorcycles

1 Answer

Have a 2006 Heritage Softail - Was running when speedometer & odometer quit working and key light came on - not engine light. Stopped at gas station - when down shifted to stop things started working but erratically. After fueling, wouldn't start - all "dash lights" were out. A few minutes later, started again, then dash lights went out again. Heading home, everything only worked when down shifting and engine under pressure. Battery is showing full charge, checked main breaker, all fuses, cleaned all connectors and sensors. Ran once - turned off, now nothing. Any suggestions

Hi Johnrobindan, and the usual suspects are:
1.Ignition/Light Key Switch not in IGNITION position.
2.Engine Stop switch in the OFF position.
3.Discharged battery, loose or corroded connections check negative cable at both ends. (solenoid chatters).
4. Bank Angle Sensor tripped and Ignition/Light Key Switch not cycled to Off and then back to
5. Starter control circuit, relay or solenoid faulty.
6. Electric starter shaft pinion gear not engaging or over-running clutch slipping.
For a prime suspect please visit website below and good Luck.

SOURCE: how to change oil for2007 heritage softail classic

The oil drain us usually a hose with a plug in it that is held by a clip on the frame. It us usually on the right hand side of the bike just behind and underneath the transmission side cover. Loosen the clamp and pull the plug out. The oil will run out of the tank. Replace plug and add new oil to the tank.

The fork oil is a very specific job needing a manual and a special tool, I don't want to insult anyones mechanical knowledge but if you have never done it before, best to take somewhere else. Engine oil on the other hand is easy, the drain tube to any softail is on the right side by where the frame meets the swing arm, has somekind of plug in it. Start and run bike for a little while, long enough to get it warm but not hot. Remove fill plug and then remove plug in drain line. Using a peice of cardboard or something put in between filter and frame , directing the oil to your drain pan instead of where ever it goes. Put 1 qt oil back in (after everything is reinstalled) start the bike and make sure the oil light goes out, when it does shut bike off and fill to the point that when it is standing upright you get a little oil on the tip of your finger, over filling may result in loss of oil cap from pressure (been there)

Check the Accessory fuse 15 Amp to see if blown If blown, check wiring under rear fender as it is common to get frayed wiring due to loom hanging down or a larger tyre than stock fitted and rubbing against wiring loom.

What can i check?

First, check for any error codes:

The speedometer is capable of displaying & clearing speedometer , tachometer TSM/TSSM , HFSM , ECM , ABS Diagnostic Trouble Codes also known as DTC's.
1 - Turn the ignition switch to off & run/stop switch is to run .
2 - Push odometer reset button in & HOLD .
3 - Turn the ignition switch on and then release odometer reset button . The background lighting should illuminate & the speedometer needle should sweep it's full range & indicator lamps ( battery , security , low fuel , check engine and cruise ) should illuminate . The word "DIAG" should then appear .
4 - Push the odometer reset button once and you will see the selection menu "PSSPtb" with the first P flashing .
5 - Each letter represents a area of the diagnostics module . The module that is flashing is the one you are going to check . To move from one letter to the next you must push the odometer reset button one time . ( from P to S to SP to t to b and back to P , ect ect )
P = ECM
S = TSM/TSSM/HFSM
SP = speedometer
t = tachometer
b = ABS codes
6 - To get the DTC code in a area of diagnostics you should PUSH & HOLD the odometer reset button in for 5 seconds and the release . If there are any DTC's the code will be displayed or the word " none " will appear if there are no DTC's . Push the odometer reset button again to view any additional codes if they exist .
7 - Record the codes .
8 - If DTC's are NOT to be cleared , press and release the odometer reset button . Part #of module will be displayed .
9 - If DTC's are to be cleared for that module , PRESS & HOLD the odometer reset button until " clear " is displayed .
10 - Press and release the odometer reset button to continue to the next module .
11 - Turn the ignition switch off to exit the diagnostic mode .
If you DO get any error codes, repost them for diagnosis.

My 2006 heritage odometer will keep total miles. It counts miles driven but once it is turned off and then back on, the milage total always goes back to 2882 total miles

If the speedometer is working and the odomter (mile counter) is not then clock is faulty. Replace as repair is not possible. If the speedo is not registering speed then the gearbox sensor is probably the cause.

Vehicle speed sensor. Top of the tranny is a connection. From this, a cable runs to the back of the odometer. Probably need to replace it
