Question about Suzuki VL 1500 Intruder LC Motorcycles

1 Answer

I have a 2001 intruder 1500. except for the short range i like the bike. on the right side in what looks like it should be an air filter and intake is actually the PAIR. i know from reading the manual that this monitors exhaust pressure flucuations and injects fresh air into the exhaust ports. i actually have 2 questions on this, First, what is the purpose of doing this. Second, is this actually needed on the bike. Can it be done away with. i am looking into modifying the air filter system on this bike and that spot taken by the PAIR would be a perfect spot to mount at. the left side where the horn is would work just as well.

Actually the PAIR system is used to reduce the emissions. If in your country the bikes aren't tested for emissions regularly then it's perfectly ok to remove it.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say that you separated the carbs from the intakes. If you mean that you are now running the carbs open to the air, without having the air flow through the filters and airbox, and then into the carbs, then you could be running too lean.

One way to see if it's too lean is to do a plug check. While the best way is to run the bike hard in top gear, that's too difficult unless you're on a race track, so try this; Run the bike for awhile at the top of second or third gear somewhere that you can do it safely, and then disengage the clutch, get completely off the throttle and coast to a stop and turn the engine off quickly. Then pull one or more spark plugs and look at the electrode end, ideally with a small magnifying glass. You can also use the camera on your smartphone, zooming in and taking a photo.

If the plug looks a bit tan or toast colored, you're OK, but if it looks white-ish, then you're probably running too lean. Conversely, if it looks dark and even a bit wet, it's too rich. You should go through the whole process more than once, to get an average.

Can you tell me where the air filter is on a vs 800 suzuki 2001

On the right side of the bike, just below the fuel tank, you should see a plastic cover with a chrome finish and 2 allen head screws. That is the air filter cover. Remove the cover and you will be able access the air filter. There are a couple of variants of the bike that use different style filters, so if possible, you might want to take the old filter with you to the Suzuki dealer so they can see which one it is and get you the correct replacement.

How to change the oil and filter on suzuki classic intruder 125 vl

Get a filter wrench at walmart (plastic) or Auto zone type place, unscrew drain plug and after all is drained then take off filter. It works bette if you warm up the bike first so the oil is warm and flows better. The oil fill and dip stick is behind the rear chrome cover on the right side. Two allen screws to remove the cover. Check for no leaks by running her after you fill up with oil.

What is the oil capacity in the crankcase of a 1993 800cc intruder. How much do you fill it too? I stuck my finger in and got no oil and there is no measure dip to tell.

holds 3 us quarts of oil with a oil filter change or if the egine was complety drained after overhaul it takes 3 1/2 us quarts of oil.
To check oil look for a small quarter size window on the clutch case, oil level should fill half the window to be full.Bike must be held level while viewing window, not on kick stand.

No manual, looking to top up the oil in crankcase.

Take the two hex screws out of right side rear cover and remove the chrome cover. The clear lens is the oil level check. The oil filler is to the left of the clear lens oil check.
The oil filter is under the battery, and the oil drain plug is toward the back underside of the engine.

Warm engine and stand upright on centerstand to drain oil, let drain for 15 minutes.

I use Castrol Power1 GPS 4T 10W-40 in my air and oil cooled Suzuki. You will need 5 quarts when changing oil and filter. The link below has diagrams of the bike in exploded views.

Where is the fuse panel on a 2000 intruder VL 1500

the fuse panel is under the speed sensor cover. it is the chrome cover on right side of bike. the same cover you have to remove to put oil in it. it is the one that does not have the oil sight glass in it. only 2 allen bolts hold it on.
