Sounds like the carbs are gummed up since its a low milage bike. either open the carbs and clean them or use a fuel system cleaner and hope for the best.

Trimmer has to stay between half choke and full choke to stay running what is it

Start with carb adjustment. One full turn out on both low and high side, then set the idle. If this doesn't fix it, then rebuild the carb.

I have a 96 yamaha virago xv250. It cranks, and idles fine. The problem is, once you start riding and get into first, you get about halfway down on the throttle and it's like the engine is dying out,...

It sounds to me like your main jet or high speed circuits could be plugged up in the carb(s) or you could have water in the fuel. If you are reasonably mechanically inclined, I would suggest removing the carbs and giving them a good cleaning. You might want to give it a fresh set of plugs and a new air and fuel filter while you are at it.

When chain saw is starte it goes to full throttle.

You understand there is a fast idle start position? If your saw is new it is triggered when the choke is pulled and remians in this position (even when choke pushed in) until the throttle is advanced once. Read your warm start instructions, it says pull clutch, push clutch, start. This is why we should buy saws from a chainsaw seller/mechanic NOT Home Depot!!!
I made the mistake ONCE of attempting to start mine without the fast idle engaged... my shoulder aches just thinking about it. GL

Poulan wild thing won't idle..Will run at high rpm's, but when you let off of the trigger it just dies, then I have to choke it to get it to start back.

try adjusting the Hand L SCREWS ,with a small screwdriver---screw the L screw in until it stops (not hard )back it out 1 full turn ---then do the same with H screw only back that out 1 1/8 turns at this point can screw the idle screw in a turn if you like.. Now start her up let it run a couple of minutes to warm up, then run it up to full revs and turn the H screw in and out slowly until it is running as sweet as it will then bacl it off 1/8 th of a turn .Now to the L screw let it idle if it will , if not screw the idle screw in unti ll it does, then adjust the sweetness of the idle with the L screw ..... adjust the speed of idle with the idle screw there is only one thng to watch donttake the H screw in past 7/8 of aturn.N ow if it is aconcern running at high rev es one handed then you can clamp the bar in a vice ,making sure you dont clamp the chain. try that good luck
