SOURCE: everytime i change the shift it feels sticky, what

Dirty oil in the gearbox is the usual cause for sticky shifters. Another cause is dirt on the shifter shaft. Clean any mud and road grime from the shaft where it goes into the gearbox.

SOURCE: 2005 yamaha r6 shift lever is limp

Do you have to drop the motor for this issue? I am kind of having the same issue with my 05 R6. Mine isnt limp but in order to up shift i have to press the lever down about an inch in order to shift up again or it wont shift at all. While down shifting it feels like i have to press a lil bit harder like its all tight down there. Any help on that would be much appreciated.

Shifter pawl adjustments FXR 5 speed

Hi Anonymous, remove transmission top cover, then put the tansmission in third gear, lift up slightly on shift lever feeling and observing spring pressure and freeplay until shifter pawl makes contact with shifter cam pin, repeat process pushing slightly down. Freeplay and spring pressure distance should be equal to within .010" There is an adjustment screw with a jam nut on the left side of the transmission case by the shift lever. Good luck

Shifter lever won't return to the " center " position always. The problem is intermittent and seems to occur more in the heat. I've heard there may be something binding the mechanism....

Follow the shifter reach rod that runs from the shift lever back to a short lever on the transmission. Take the nut off and take the rod loose from this short lever. Then, move the forward like you are going to shift into low gear but don't actually shift the transmission into gear. Feel for the spring tension. Then, move the lever backwards and feel for the spring tension there. Check the shift lever and the reach rod for binding. If you don't feel the spring tension trying to return the lever back to the center, it's likely that the shifter pawl return spring is broken. This spring is what returns the shifter lever back to 'center". But,the temperature of the transmission will not change this. If the spring is broken, it's broken cold or hot. If the spring is good and there is not bind in the linkage, the problem may be in the shifter cam mechanism inside the transmission. Either way, this is an internal issue in the transmission.

I have a 1981 suzuki gs 400 and the gear lever seams to be sticking badly. Can't get it back into neutral ? It has been leaking but I don't know where from

Chances are strong the bike has a bent shift fork. This is a major repair requiring a complete engine tear down. As far as the leak goes, there is a shift shaft seal, drive-shaft ( sprocket shaft ) seal, Kick shaft seal. shift drum switch seal, crank shaft seals and clutch shaft seal. Also, there is the right outer case cover gasket, oil filler "O" ring seal, and the center case mating surface seal. The center case seal is actually a semi-liquid gasket compound applied to the mating surfaces prior to the center case re-assembly. The shift fork repair is not recommended for the unexperienced home mechanic. Below are the main parts if a Suzuki shift mechanism and a diagram of how the shift forks move left and right to change gears. Please rate my answer. Thanks! tombones49_15.gif

The shifter locks and it is hard to get it out of gear

check your brake light switch. If it is loose or broken the shifter interlock will not disengage; as the power to the solenoid goes through the brake light switch. Otherwise it is a problem with the the brake light fuse, switch or shifter lock solenoid.

Overriding the system:

On the riight side of the shift lever. There is a small round plastic cover. (The left side of the shift lever is P, the right side of the shift lever is a small round plastic cover about half inch.) Pop out the plastic cover, push the lever on the handle and insert a long philips screwdriver in it. It should shift now even if the engine is off. ( You do not need to turn the screwdriver, just insert it)

2000 harley davidson softail custom 3,500 miles on stock motor when in 3rd gear trying to downshift into second it goes by it right into nuetrual??? why its annyoing

It should not do this. Evidently, there is something amiss in the shifting portion of your transmission. I would try adjusting the shifter pawl first. This adjustment is not difficult but requires a specail tool with which to get onto the adjustet. The adjuster is on the left side of the transmission just forward of the shifter shaft lever. It is behind the outer primary which makes getting to it difficult without the special tool.

To check it, with the engine off, gently depress the shifter lever downwards like you are going to shift into low gear. Depress until you feel the shifter pawl engage the shifter drum cam and is beginning to shift the transmission into gear. In other words depress the shift lever down until you feel it bump but don't shift it into gear. Then, do the same thing lifting the lever up like you are going to shift into second. Does the lever travel the same distance downward as it does upwards. If not, the shifter pawl needs adjusting.

If this is not the problem, you may have to remove the transmission top cover. With the cover off, you can see the adjustment of the shifter pawl. You may have a problem with the shifter pawl itself or the detent ball may have a problem.

At any rate, it should be something that can be repaired without a major disassembly of the transmission.

Good Luck

Revtech 5 speed tranny. Transmision some times will get stuck in inbtween 5th gear and 4th gear, I would have to try and shift up and down from 5th to 4th, 4th to 5th and some times it would shift down on...

Sounds more like a shifter pawl problem. I'm not familiar with the RevTech tranny but it should be very similar to the original H-D tranny. The shifter pawl has to be adjusted so that it's got equal travel in both directions. If you're trying to adjust it. Put the tranny in neutral. Now lift the shifter lever until you feel the pawl engage the pin in the shifter drum. Then go back to the middle of the movement range and depress the shift lever until you feel the pawl contact the other pin. The lever should move about the same distance in each direction. If not, the shifter pawl needs to be adjusted. On some bikes, it take some special tools to be able to get to the adjuster. The adjuster is on the left side just in front of the lever that connects to the shifter pawl shaft sticking out of the transmission.

it sounds like a trasmission cover problem in the old gm's you could
remove the shift boot + there is a cap at the base of the shifter with a
slot for the shift lever to move around in this is spring loaded push down
on the cap turn c clockwise it should pop up + you can remove the
shifter use a flashlight + look into the cover there should be sqare shafts
with notch's in them use a long heavy screw driver(or tire iron) press the
clutch down(e brake on wheels chocked) and allign slots in the ctr. the
transmission should now be in neutral put the shifter in and gently shift
through the gears if it will not go into all the gears you may have a
bent or broken shift fork in that case the cover has to come off the
transmission. if you have a manual transfer case put it in neutrel and
press the clutch + gently try to wiggle the shift into neutral somtimes
you get lucky. if your setup is different then what I described drop by
the library + check out a chiltons/moter/mitchells or haynes repair
manual any of these can give you step by steps + diagrams for this
project. hope this helps good luck

97 4x4 honda 300 fourtrax shifter will not return after shifting.

Do you feel a spring back when pushing both up AND down on the shift lever? if not, your shift return spring(s) are not positioned correctly or missing.
