Question about Harley Davidson FLSTF Fat boy Motorcycles

1 Answer

Last week i whent to start my 04 fatboy and forgot it was in first gear. it lunged and i squeezwd the clutch. when i went to restart it, it sounded like the starter wasnt engaging. i put it back in first and rocked it back and forth hard, put it in neutral and it started. now a week later it sounds like its not engaging again and it wont start at all. its not grinding or anything but it sounds like the starter is just spinning. i removed the starter and had it bench tested and its all good along with the relay. i replaced the starter and its still does the same thing.it has a new battery. all the teeth are in place and i see no grinding or stripping...sorry so long but im stumped..any help would be appreciated. thanks

Your "over running" clutch is bad in the starter. This is the device that locks up so the starter can turn the engine but then freewheels when the engine starts to keep the starter armature from being blown apart by excessive RPMs. A lot of people call this part a "Bendix" but it's inside the starter instead of external like the older starter drives were. The part cost about $100 and you have to take the starter back off and disassemble it to replace the clutch.

good luck

Car shifts but gears do not engage

It sounds like you have a clutch problem, this is what happens when your clutch is no more, You may have noticed it getting sluggish for some time or lots of motor and not much acceleration. If this sounds familar, get your clutch checked. When it gives up, you are not going anywhere.

91 nissan pathfinder 5 speedmanual.... Clutch pedal feels stiff and when i start it in gear the truck lunges forward like the clutch it still engaged.... Master and slave have been replaced and all hyd....

It really sound like you are going to need a new clutch. If the slave or master cylinders were bad they would feel loose, a stiff pedal usually means something came apart in the pressure plate.

I have a 2003 ktm 250sx and when shifting at high rpm's it won't shift.

How is your clutch? Does it slip or drag when starting out? When you put it into 1st gear when starting out does the bike lunge forward? Hold it in first gear with the clutch in and rev the bike up. See if the bike wants to move forward with the clutch in.It sounds to me like your clutch isn't set right or getting worn out. Much easier to shift at low rpms on a clutch than high rpms. I hope this helps...

Replaced starter gear then torqued to 5 lbs, fired up,fine? replaced primary and now wont start?

Well, first off....Dont try starting it anymore without the primary, it can damage the gears. The problem you describe is common with custom builds. I'll assume you purchased the correct stock jackshaft for your model and installed the lock plate and everything else correctly. You can tighten the jackshaft bolt to 7-9lbs. Your last step is putting a wrench on the assembly and pulling it out and turning 1/4 turns to make sure its not binding, as a last resort you can bevel the jackshaft bushing on the out primary so it goes in smoothly - thats what I did on mine and it works like a charm. Good luck
