Question about 2005 Harley Davidson XL 883C Sportster Custom

1 Answer

I have a 2005 Harley Sportster. I replaced the battery, turned the key and got nothing. front light is on. Checked fuses, 2nd fuse in first row was blown. replaced fuse, as soon as it touched contacts it blew. Doesn't change result if key is on or off. replaced fuse with battery disconnected, fuse blew as soon as battery was hooked back up. Does anyone have a diagram of the fuse box so I can see what that fuse is for so I have a starting point for troubleshooting.

Harley Davidson Wiring Diagrams and Schematics
Hi Anonymous, you have a hard/dead short that should be easy to find generally they are the easiest. Time to get out your test light and connect it to the power side of the, circuit breaker or the blown fuse receiver, start by tracking the out bound wire towards the ignition switch and beyond if necessary, when the test light quits lighting you are very close to your short. For a free wiring diagram please visit the website above. Good luck and have nice day.

I keep blowing my acc and my lights fuse,,, tried replacing the tsc mod same problem,, chassis ground is good,,, wireing harness is intact,,,, at this point i'm clueless

You need to determine exactly what is controlled by those fuses. Disconnect all of them on each circuit. Reconnect them one at the time unitl you blow a fuse. Then you have found the culprit. You didn't mention what year model your bike was but I can scan a copy of a wiring diagram for a 1999-on Sportster and send it to you. Contact me directly at

Sounds like you've either got a blown fuse somewhere or the switch is bad. You'll need a volt meter or test light and a schematic to find the problem. This may sound stupid but make sure the "engine run/stop switch" is in the "run" position. I've seen a lot of people overlook that.

Start tracing the power from the battery, through the switch and then down the line. I think the fuses are under the electrical panel on the left side of the bike. Check those fuses again.

Check your batt. cables  good, especi ally the terminal ends. Pull and twist them to make sure they aren't almost burnt or worn into. This same thing happened to my nephew's 1200 Sportster. Pos. cable was almost completely into INSIDE the insulation near the battery terminal.
