Question about 2008 Harley Davidson VRSCDX Night Rod Special

1 Answer

I gust bought a 2007 night rod special without a user manual. The bike would not restart after a short ride. I turned on the ignition switch, pulled in the clutch and heard an electrical pop from the clutch area. The speedometer display began flashing and the electrical system died. About 2 hours later (after the bike cooled) I tried again and everything went back to normal and the bike started. This happens every time I ride (3 times total). Could this be the battery, if so, how do I replace it?

Check the battery connections. Remove, clean and reinstall them. You probably had them off doing the wiring and they aren't making a good connection now. Always remove the negative first and install it last.

firstly does thlever still have resistance or does it feel like it is disconected if the later is the case then im sory to say it appears that you have blown the slave cylinder seals to check this remove the fluid reservior cap if the fluid level is down it is almost certain that the seals have blown there are two ways you can go to remedy this problem firstly you can overhaul the slave cylinder this will entail removeing the fluid line from the cylinder do this with a container under it to catch the remaining fluid & dispose of same dont under any circumstance reuse clutch or brake fluid haveing done that remove the cylinder from the machine once haveing done this you will need a pair of internazl circlip pliers to remove the circlip that prevents the piston from coming out of the cylinder onceyou have that out remove the piston your now ready to inspect the bore of the cylinder for scoring ie deep scratches or pitting & the seals themselves for damage if thereis no visible scoring of the cylinder give it a good clean ensuring there are is no contamination in it fit new seals reasembly is the reverse of dismantling haveing reasembled fill the reservior with fresh fluid bleed the air from the system & it should be happy days if however the cilinder or the pisto are damaged it will more than likely be cheaper & less frustrating to purchase a new cylinder from your nearest dealer fit that blead yhe air from the system & of you go all the best Geoff

Hi, Matt it saddens me to inform you that you have to put on your Battery Priest Robe and prepare yourself for the Ceremonial "LOAD TEST" but before you begin, maintenance type batteries must be topped off with distilled Holy Water and all batteries must present their terminals to the battery charging altar to receive the electrical infusion of Holy Ions until they have reached a 100% full charge of 12.5 volts or better.
Below is a quick and easy test to see if your battery is in good condition or needs Last Rites and must be replaced.
1. Start by disconnecting the spark plug cables.
2. Adjust voltmeter to DC volts 20-volt range
3. Place the voltmeter leads to the battery terminals.
4. Turn the run/off switch to run.
5. Turn the ignition switch on and press the starter button.
6. Watch the voltmeter as your engine turns over for 15 seconds.
7. If the voltage drops below 9.5 volts, the battery is faulty and must be replaced.
