Question about 2005 Suzuki GSF 1200 Bandit S

1 Answer

My bike has some kind of electrical short. The lights, instruments, etc sometimes stay on after the key is turned off. I can crank the starter when this happens, but the ignition won't fire. I noticed that by jiggling some electrical gizmo's behind the seat, I can get the lights/instruments to shut off. (Small black boxes located behind the seat under the plastic near the tail light. I think one contains a fuse, the other one has multiple pin connectors so maybe a computer chip?) Has anybody with a Suzuki Bandit, or any other motorcycle, had a similar problem? I will probably take the bike in to the dealer, but thought I'd post hear in case there is a quick fix. Thanks

The small black box is possibly a relay. It may be sticking on, if so it will need a new one. Tell the dealer the same story and it should be a quick fix

What would cause dash lights and gauges to not come on occasionally when key is turned to the position just before starting the car?

I would initially suspect a bad ignition switch (not the lock....the actual switch). It could also be a short poor ground, failing component on the instrument cluster board etc. Try go ogling your problem with your specific year make and model to see if this may be a common issue.

When i try o put the battery in - with the key out, stand down, etc - it starts the engine

When you say Start the you mean the starter engages and starts cranking engine?
If thats the case most bikes use a starter relay (aka starter solenoid) that has a cable directly from the battery to it. The starter button with the key on, energizes the relay, so the solenoid sends power to crank the starter.
If the solenoid is stuck in the closed (electrically) position power will flow to starter whenever the battery cables are connected. So the solenoid needs to be could try tapping it to free the contacts but its probably damaged.

If the bike is cranking and starting and running without the key in, it would suggest multiple wiring issues or mods have been made.

New battery & starter. Have lights horn radio and all other electrical with key in iniction dash lights up with all instrument lights, when key is fully turned to start truck all lights go dead and...

Assuming the engine has not siezed, there is a short in the starter circuit. Probably the starter/solenoid, but you can verify. Disconnect the negative battery terminal, then the big red wire from the starter solenoid. Wrap the wire terminal tom prevent shorting, reconnect the battery terminal and try again. If nothing happens this time, replace the starter/solenoid. If short is still present with starter unhooked, trace wire back from starter to find short. Let me know if you have more questions.

It's electrical problem, it seems like something is draining your bike's battery, not letting enough current to go to starter for a strong engine cranking, I suspect there might be a short circuit within the ignition switch and/or wiring, as you said the bike keeps running even with the key out.
