My dt wont stat in gear with the clutch engaged?

All the Japanese bikes I have owned won't start in gear unless you pull in the clutch lever. There is a small plunger switch fixed to the clutch lever stock (the part that does not move). This switch is connected to the ignition and starter circuits, so when the clutch lever is closed the starter won't turn. Check the bike starts OK when not in gear. If you try to start the bike in gear and it does not start with the clutch lever pulled then the switch is not working. Hope this helps.

Hi, Darrensemail the ignition circuit cut-off system comprising of the side stand switch, clutch switch and neutral switch has the following functions:
a. It prevents starting when the transmission is in gear and the side stand is up, but the clutch lever is not pulled.
b. It prevents starting when the transmission is in gear and the clutch lever is pulled, but the side stand is still down.
c. It cuts the running engine when the transmission is in gear and the side stand is moved down.
Periodically check the operation of the ignition circuit cut-off system according to the following.
With the engine turned off:
1. Move the side stand down.
2. Make sure that the engine stop switch is set to "RUN"
3. Turn the key to "ON".
4. Shift the transmission into the neutral position.
5. Push the start switch if the engine does not start the neutral switch may be faulty.
With the engine still running:
6. Move the side stand up.
7. Keep the clutch lever pulled.
8. Shift the transmission into gear.
9. Move the side stand down if the engine does not stall you may have a faulty side stand switch.
After the engine has stalled:
10. Move the side stand up.
11. Keep the clutch lever pulled.
12. Push the start switch if the engine does not start you may have a faulty clutch switch.
This check is most reliable if performed with a warmed-up engine.

Hello,
I dont think that you are doing anything wrong. Your bike has a side stand safety switch. the switch is designed to cut the engine if you put it in gear while the side stand is down or it thinks that the side stand is down. There is also a clutch lever switch that allow you to start the bike in gear while the clutch is pulled in. I would check the side stand switch first and make sure that the side stand is lifting all the way when you flip it up. If the stand is bent or dry, corroded it may not be activating the switch properly.
Next you should check the clutch lever switch. Make sure that the connector is plugged in properly. Also look underneath the lever and you can check the plunger for the switch to make sure it is moving freely.

If you have recently added different levers or a sidestand this can be the problem. somne of the aftermarket parts have to be worked on in order to get the switches acting properly.

Thanks and I hope that this helps.
Steve

WON'T START WHILE IN GEAR

You are probably having an issue with the clutch safety switch. The switch is designed to keep you from starting the bike in gear,by accident , when you think the bike is in neutral. The switch is located on the handlebar left switch assembly and it keeps the bike from starting in gear (unless you pull in the clutch lever). It is spring loaded, follow the clicking sound , typically there is a small pin that is pushed in by the lever cutting the power to the solenoid.Usually the pin breaks off causing the starter circuit to be available all the time. In this case it is probably dirty and not making electrical contact, therefore it is not working when you are in gear and pulling the clutch lever. See if you can clean it, if not, replace it . At any rate you should be able to easily test it with a volt meter.
