First step... do not pull engine...remove battery and starter connections, if you have any skid bars on the left front, remove them. remove shift peg, remove front covers on that side, remove starter bolts, pull starter out, gear will stay with chain inside cover and drop down a bit, don't be scared. If you have bought an aftermarket starter watch that the spines and gears may not match, put the matching gear in the chain inside the case and put some assembly grease to hold it center in case while you install the new starter. It does take some self control but way more easier than pulling engine.

Hooked brake lights up and it stopped starting and all lights stopped working when u turn key on i got new battery and rectafifer on it

Hi, Steve and the usual suspects are:
1. Ignition Switch not in the "ON" position.
2. Engine Run Switch in the "OFF" position.
3. Discharged battery, check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
4. Bank angle sensor tripped and ignition/light key switch not cycled to the "OFF" position and then back to the "ON" position.
5. Faulty starter button/switch.
6. Faulty jiffy stand or clutch pull in switch/sensor.
7. Security alarm needs a reset.
8. Starter control circuit, relay, or solenoid faulty.
9. Main fuse or circuit breaker blown or faulty.
10. Electric starter shaft pinion gear is not engaging or over-running starter clutch slipping.

My 1984 honda goldwing aspencade headlight and instrument pannel stopped working

Honda Goldwings starter buttons have 2 sets of contacts....one set for the lights, one set for the starter circuit...the idea being to shut off lights to conserve power while cranking the starter. The button can stick and not fully release so starter stops but lights don't return.
With key off spray a little WD40 around button then work the button in and out, letting it snap out a few times....then retry key and see if headlight is back.

1983 gl1100 aspencade. It has digital speedometer

The speedometer, trip odometer and odometer are all driven by the speed sensor at the front wheel (NO CABLES).

Try the simple (but time consuming) test indicated in the attached image.

Is the ignition switch for a 1983 1100 aspencade inerchangable with other year and model goldwings

it depends, if your ignition switch is the long one(appx) three inches long, then sorry to say, no.
my father had the same problem, switch is no longer available, used ones are almost impossible to find. But!!! good news!!! It only took about fifteen minutes, and a test light to figure out how to wire in a universal ignition switch, (purchased at oreillys for about 13 dollars!)

We removed starter from a 1983 Honda Goldwing 1100. Is there a special trick to installing it? When trying to replace starter it goes in except for the last half inch.

the starter is the tensioner, there is an internal besides that as well. This is one of the most difficult out there that is for sure. You may have to rotate the engine or starter gear subtly to get everything to line up. Let me know if you have any other concerns.

Buying 1983 aspencade motorcycle , what problems

I have goldwings since 1980. They are very reliable. First thing I would change is the timing belt. (If it fails, bent valves...) As far as the stator, the normal fix for these 4 cylinder early ones (if they are still working) is to cut the 3 wire plug in between the stator & wiring harness & solder the leads together. Dirt, water, corrosion in this connection makes the stator fail. Make sure your carbs are clean and final drive & ft bearings are re-greased. Next problem that occurs that you can check for is oil seal in front forks. You can remove them & put new seals in by yourself if you have the tools. You should have lots more trouble free mileage if bike has been properly maintained. Rick
