The speed sensor is usually on the rear of the engine back near the front belt pulley on the right hand side.

Good Luck

...more specifically, the speed sensor on a 2004 sporty is, (while astride the beast) to the right rear side of the rear cylinder, is oblongish in shape(like a typical bathtub), and is topped with a hex bolt...you'll likely be using a swivel headed screwdriver to get it out... For all their mystique, they could certainly do better in certain areas re design...jus sayin...

Where is the starter relay located on 2004 Harley sportster

Hi Anonymous, 1998 and later Sportster models circuit breaker and fuses were located in an electrical bracket behind the starter relay and data link that was mounted behind the left side panel. 1997 and earlier circuit breakers only no fuses were located under the seat. Good luck.

99 sportster speedo stuck at 55mph

Hi Joseph, always check your instrument fuse before performing the next procedure, try cleaning your speed sensor located on top of the transmissions right side between the top cover and the chrome starter end cap on Twin Cams and on top of the engine case between the rear cylinder and the starter motor for Sportsters. Remove the the bolt that secures the sensor and pull it out of the transmission. Inspect sensor for obvious damage and repace if necessary. If sensor has no damage then wipe clean any obvious contamination like micro fiberous material with a clean rag and reinstall, torque bolt to 8 ft lbs.

2007 harley davidson xl sportster 883 speedometer is not working. How do I troubleshoot this problem?

If you're lucky it might be the speed sensor located in the gearbox casing. This is a hall effect device and is magnetic and so can pick up metal fragments from the inside of the gearbox. I have a 2001 Sportster and the Sensor is located on the top of the gearbox casing, just below the starter. I'd expect it to be in a similar position on a later bike such as yours, but I can't be sure. Once you've located it, take it out (can be a bit fiddly) and make sure that its clear of any debris. If not the sensor, you're probably going to need to substitute in a working speedo. Be careful because a pre-2004 speedo is electronic, but is not compatible with 2007 bike. Best of luck!

Speedometer does not work at all no odometer or speedometer

Try cleaning the speed sensor. It's located on the top of the transmission under the starter. Remove the hold down bolt, pull it out, and wipe the metal shavings off the end. Replace and try it. Some metal in the transmission is normal, but changing the fluid often helps.

2000 harley sportster 883,speedometer wont work

If you're lucky it might be the Sensor. This is located in the top of the gearbox casing just below the starter. This is a hall effect device and as such is magnetic. It can pick up metal fragments from inside the gearbox. Its held in by a single screw. It can be a bit fiddly to remove. Take it out and remove any debris from the magnetic body.
If not the sensor, then it would probably be best to substitute in a working speedo. Be careful though because the speedo post 2004 is not compatible (after that the bike has a computer). Make sure any replacement speedo is 1995 to 2003.
