Question about Honda XR 250 R Motorcycles

1 Answer

1984 XR250R - I changed front sprocket from 13T to 14T. The 14T was listed as an OEM part for the bike so I figured it should fit. Now the chain rubs as it passes over the front sprocket. Turns out there is a metal guide rail inside the front chain guard. I prefer not to remove this guide, I could shave 1/8" from it. Have you heard of this problem before?

The metal guide is there to protect the engine case if the chain breaks. Shaving 1/8th inch will not hurt any thing under most conditions. Leaving the piece in will still help protect the bike.

I need to know the size of the center hole on a 19 tooth transmission sprocket for an apc mini chopper Thanks

Why do you need to know the size of the centre hole. That one look in great condition. The size is the size of the shaft it fits on, so you measure the narrower distance, which is between the sprocket tooth that is under the middle of your thumb nail, to the second tooth past your index finger. All this links have info.

Give the bike a thorough service. These engines are very strong, but as with any engine this can be compromised by bad or missed servicing. The vibration could be any number of things, but check the front wheel bearings and the fork mounts and also the chain and sprockets. if the chain is old it can cause a vibration which would seem as if it is coming from the engine. If you have to change the chain then do the sprockets at the same time. If you fit a new chain to old sprockets it will wear faster and cost more.

Trying to figure out out how and what will be changed by going from a 15T to a 14T on the front sproket while keeping the original size on the rear. It's on a 2006 Katana GSX 600F

Hello, you will have quicker take off (bottom end) and lose top end speed, you will have the same effect if you increase the teeth on the back sprocket, if you want more top end speed do the opposite. You are changing your front sprocket from 15 teeth to 14 teeth which is going to turn the sprocket on the front quicker causing the rear wheel to go quicker, but because your engine is going to get to its maximum output quicker meaning you will lose a little on your top speed. Keep in mind if it is only your front sprocket being replaced (reduced in T) you may need to shorten your chain, it is recommended you replace front and rear sprockets along with your chain for maximum life on all 3 parts.

Can you change tranny gears to decrease rpm's on highway? Or maybe change sprockets.

You can add teeth to the front sprocket or take teeth off of the rear sprocket. In the case of your bike , I do not think there is a 17 tooth front available so your best option would be to shorten your chain and drop from the 44 tooth rear sprocket to 40 tooth or a 36 tooth rear sprocket. That would be like adding one or two teeth to the front sprocket. Your stock is 16/44 so decrease from there. Be sure to ID your chain, get a chain breaker, and a new master link.

How to increase top end speed - 2007 Kawasaki Ninja EX250R

you can change the sprockets. If you go to a 16 tooth front sprocket. two teeth on a front sprocket is like droping 4 teeth on the rear. You could drop 2 teeth on the rear sprocket but a 43 tooth is probably harder to find. the usual choices for front are 14,15,16 tooth.
For the rear they are 44,45,46 tooth

The way to remeber gearing changes is on REAR sprocket is smaller=faster and larger=slower top end.
the FRONT is OPPOSITE to the rear smaller=slower and bigger=faster.
You may have to lengthen or shorten the chain depending whjch way you go.

Can i use sprockets off other bikes to fit honda hornet 250,99 model.if so which bikes?

hi,for the cost of  new sprockets you are far better staying with the oem or equivalent after market ones, you will find that just about every model of bike has a different sprocket/chain setup, even similar looking bikes from the same manufacturer can be different, when matching up sprockets be very careful to make sure the offsets and spacings are identical because if they are not exactly right you will have all sorts of problems with chain and sprocket wear...cheers

    Chain wont stay on

Did you replace the chain with a new one ? If the chain is to big for the sprockets than you need to purchase a link remover from anywhere that sells accessory's for bikes.

Remove one link at a time untill the chain fits perfectly.

Post back if you have further info. Thank you for choosing Fixya!
