How do I cure vapor lock?

If you're getting vapor lock, the bike will die after a few miles, and not restart for several minutes.
If the bike dies, immediately remove the gas cap and see if the bike will restart right away.
You could also ride it without the gas cap (try it on a tank that's 1/4-1/2 full, NOT fully full, because of gas splash) and see if it doesn't die after a few miles.

On the road, won't start.

40 YEARS later???

If you mean every 40 miles you have to open gas cap to restart, the gas tank vent is clogged, not allowing air into the gas tank to replace the fuel leaving, creating a vapor lock.

Find the tank venting system, and clear.

2005 Electra glide shuts off while going up a hill when it has half a tank or less

3 things to check out. Cheapest is to set your tripmeter when filling up. If this problem occurs after riding more than 180 miles, then the fuel gauge is probably reading incorrectly. Maximum range on full tank is around 200 miles. I haven't "walked for gas" since 1968. Second cheapest one is two is to add a water remover product (not fuel injector cleaner or other related product) to a full tank of gas. Make sure to measure the amount in proportion to your 5 gallon fuel tank to a car's fuel tank. The other is to take it to a qualified mechanic who can test the fuel pump pressure.

How do you know your going to run out of gas before you do???

You dont ...

Several things for your consideration.

You should be able to ride for about 100 miles on a full tank. Fill up every 100 miles.

There should be a three way valve on your tank; OFF - ON - RESERVE. NEVER set this to RESERVE unless you miss the 100 mile fill up. Otherwise, you will be walking.

You may be able to go 150 miles on a tank ... DONT DO IT. @ 90 miles, start looking for a station where you can fill up. Your pututti will also thank you.

I purchased a gas tank for my '07 Deuce and had it painted. The problem is that I did not notice that it does not have the bracket inside the tank for mounting the fuel level sender. Is there an option for...

To mount a fuel gauge in the tank, the left side "fuel inlet" must be designed for the sending unit and gauge. I'm afraid that there is no way to modify your tank much less without ruining your new paint.

Do like all of us old timers do, about every 150-200 miles, stop for fuel. Evidently your bike is equipped with a carb or you'd have a large hole for mounting the fuel pump and such. I'd put a Pingel manual petcock on the tank. They are worth the money and it may save you from a major headache in the future. If you're still running the original petcock, it is vacuum operated and will sooner or later get a hole in the diaphragm. Then you'll be stuck somewhere with a full tank of fuel but none in the carb. Put the petcock in the "ON" position and fill the tank. Ride until your engine runs out of gas and not the miles it took to do this. This is how many miles you can go before you need to find a station. I've got a '94 FXDWG that the fuel gauge quit many years ago. I've also been riding since 1966 and I never had a fuel gauge until I bought this bike. Old bikers rock.

Mrs. lok is planning a 600-mile trip. her car has an 18-gallon gas tank and gets 29 miles per gallon.will 1 tank full of gas be enough for the trip

No, she will be able to make the trip with only 1 tank of gas.

She has an 18 gallon gas tank.
1 gallon = 29 miles

The 18 gallons / tank multiplied by the 29 miles / gallon
= 522 miles / tank

She will run out of gas in 522 miles.

Put a full can 16 oz of Seafoam in the gas tank full of fuel and ride it. It may be a dirty carb. If it has a fuel filter replace it also check the air filter.
