What is a coil pack on a car

A coil pack is the modern-day equivalent to an older vehicle's ignition coil (which provides electrical spark for all of the spark plug wires when combined with a distributor, distributor cap and rotor). However, one coil pack usually only drives 2-4 spark plug wires or boots (though some drive 6). In some cases 1 coil-on boot configuration is used and no spark plug wires are present. In this case the vehicle may use one coil per spark plug. Basically, a modern V8 will require 2-8 coil packs to provide spark for combustion, where'as an older V8 would usually only have one ignition coil. A four-cylinder vehicle will usually have 2-4 (depending on whether or not it utilizes a coil on boot configuration). Some V6 vehicles use 1 coil pack for all 6 cylinders and the top resembles that of an older distributor cap, with connections for spark plug wires. Many V6 configurations use 3 coil packs. Coil packs should be replaced every 60,000-100,000 miles with a full tune-up, or as need. They are expensive, but they help your vehicle operate efficiently and are good for the environment.

I can'not find the location for where to install my 1995 t100 spark plug

I have a 97 T100 and it's the same way. Im about to change mine now. I've got a number 5 misfire. But there are 6 plugs. If u trace the 3 wires u see coming from the plugs on the driver side of motor they will go to the passenger side to what is called the coil the other 3 plugs will be under the coil there are only 3 wires. It kinda through me off also. Hope this helps you out.

Spark plug wire boot grounding out on coil, 96 outback 2.5 automatic, just put new spark plug wires, new spark plugs, and new coil on. ran great for two weeks, now spark is jumping out of boot at coil on...

Hi Solarstarene.
It sounds like the rubber boot is not completely seated or there is a small crack in the boot itself. This will cause arcing to the nearest ground when the vehicle is put into gear. Try removing the wire and turning the boot about 180 degrees to see if this will stop the arcing. I would replace the wires with a better set, preferably from the dealer even though they cost a little more. Hope this helps.

It was running fine and then all of a suddun its running rough, it wont shift over and the engine light is blinking.. its a custom 2001 buik century. we need to fix the car so we can get back and forfth to...

flashing engine light means engine misfire. let car idle and mist the plug wires down with water, rev the engine up and down and look for little sparks jumping from the wires. and arcing wires can cause problems. before changing any bad wires check the coil packs where the wires plug in the three small boxes on the top back of motor. they are three packs with two wires each. one pack at a time take the two wires off to reveal the coil towers. have an assistant start the motor and make sure the spark goes from tower to tower. repeat on remaining two packs. if the spark goes straight down the tower the coil needs replaced. if there is no spark, the coil needs replaced.

No start on old gasoline forklift engine.

most likely the ign switch is ok if you are getting spark. so you have a hot spark at coil and weak fire at plugs? if you have a test light check the positive side of coil for power when turning key on and cranking. if it is dropping power on positive side then ign switch could be bad. can "hotwire" coil by jumping a wire to positive side of coil to pos of battery this will eliminate ign switch.

Mtd snowblower 4.5 no spark new coil, new plug, wire is good, switch is good, new shear pin

Hello pbck98:

>>The Following is a Basic Instruction File I Made for Checking the Coil/Ign Coil/Magnetron/Armature on Small Engines. Any Input is Appreciated.
>>**To Check the Ign Coil; Remove the Spark Plug/s.
>>With a Good Plug, Wrap a Wire Around the Threads of the Plug and Attach the Other End of the Wire to the Engine Block. >>Remove the Blower Housing (metal engine cover). The Wire that is Connected to the Coil/Ign Module from the Shut Off Switch needs to be Removed (unplugged) from the Coil/Ign Module.
>>Now Check for Spark at the Plug.
>>If Spark, then the Shut Off Switch or the Wire is Bad.
>>If Still No Spark, then the Coil/Ign Module is Bad. If there are Safety Switches on this Unit and the Coil is Good; you Need to Check the Safety Switches for Being Bad and Check the Oil Guard Switch also.**
>>If you have a New Coil/Ign Coil and Still No Spark, then
>>Turn the Coil Over and Check for Spark. Ign Coils are Wound 1 Way for Clockwise Engine and the Oposite Way for Counter Clockwise Rotation Engines. I have Seen Ign Coil Boxed Wrong and Turning the Ign Coil Over will Correct the Problem.
>>The Coil is Gapped to .015in from the Flywheel.
For Better Assistance;
>>Send me the Make, Model and Type or Spec Numbers Off the Engine, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you.
Please, Do Not Hesitate, If I Missed Something or you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem, I am Here if You Require More Assistance.
Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Be Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck

Changing spark plug wires in 1998 camry

You aer not clear about your problem, when replacing plugs and wires all the boots need to stay in place, the larger boot goes around the spark plug, making sure the metal is secure around the tip of the plug, the oppisite end fits the distributer cap, making sure the metal at the end of the wire is securely in the hole. You said you have 3 boots, you should boots for each end of each plug wire and a plug wire for each spark plug
