Question about 2001 Yamaha V Star 1100 Custom

2 Answers

I have a 2005 Yamaha V-Star 1100 which I've had in storage for over 6 months. When I try to start it the engine starts to kick in but then the engine light comes on and you can hear the starter clicking. Battery seems fine as all lights come on. Appreciate any help or suggestions as I don't have a trailer for the bike and it will be a problem trying to get it to a shop.

Have not tried push starting but I will. Would a partially dead battery explain the engine light coming on too?

I'll try push starting it. Would a partially dead battery explain the engine light coming on after it 'almost' starts?

Put the battery in a charger on trickle mode for a few hours. Bike started right up. Thanks

Remove the battery and drop into an autozone or the like and have the battery load tested. even an almost dead battery will have enough "juice" to run the lights but once you put a load on it such as the starter it won't have enough power. have you tried push starting the bike ?

i'd have to think that the light is in "diagnostic" mode... basically tells you it works. if the motor isn't running i wouldn't read to much into it coming on unless of course it won't start at all.

Battery low use some jump cables from your car ,or put battery on charge trickle charge for a week to de sulphate the plates ,do this anyway after jumping the bike as will help restore the battery to a new condition

What would cause a 2005 vstar classic 1100 not start when the starter is engaged and why would it sound as if the engine lost its compression and how would i go about finding out what the proublem is

Hi, Anonymous the starter drive/Bendix/clutch is a mechanical gear driven component that engages the clutch pack ring gear to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed, it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced. My 2009 950 v star will not come on . no lights horn or nothing

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Ignition Switch not in the "ON" position.
2. Engine Run Switch in the "OFF" position.
3. Discharged battery, needs to be 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
4. Check the battery terminals for damage or corrosion check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
5. Tip over sensor needs a reset.
6. Faulty ignition switch.
7. Faulty starter button.
8. Faulty kickstand or clutch pull in switch/sensor.
9. Starter control circuit, relay, or solenoid faulty.
10. Main fuse or circuit breaker may be blown or faulty.
11. Check for engine trouble codes.

When trying to start my V Star 1100 2004 it kick into the starter on each turn especialy when cold. When running, it run good but sometime it misfire up to the point that it stoped the engine once.

THESE BIKES ARE EQUIPPED WITH A "ONEWAY" STARTER CLUTCH TO PREVENT ENGINE DAMAGE IN THE EVENT OF A MISFIRE AT STARTUP,"KICKBACK". AS FAR AS THE MISFIRE, I WOULD RECOMMEND CHANGING THE PLUGS TO BEGIN WITH. IF THE BIKE ISNT STOCK, I.E. PIPES ARE AIR CLEANERS, IT MAY ALSO NEED REJETTING IF IT HASNT BEEN DONE.

No starter engagement 2005 Silverado 1100

I would seriouly look at the starter clutch, the 1100 yamaha cruiser motors are notorious for this problem way back when the same motor was in the viragos and the xvs 1100 vstars, yamaha have tried to fix the prob over the years but stillhavn't got it right. if it just spins and whirs without engaging the engine, but sometime will kick in engagement, it sounds like your starter clutch is on it's way out. they cost from yamaha around $450- 500 ea plus around $350 to fit you have to include a $30 gasket in all that.
