Are you starting with aa charged battery? Are you starting with an electric starter or does this bike have a kick starter? Did you measure if you have any voltage coming out of your generator?

How did you test for a spark? Did you take out the spark plug cable inserted a spark plug and held it against the chassis? If you did, did you not get a spark then? If you did not try this, try it and see if you get a spark. You must hold the edge of the spark plug, the metal part against a metal part of the chassis. If you don't get a spark you should check your ground of your engine.

  • stang_pain Aug 21, 2010

yes i had it held against a bare spot on the frame to make sure it had good ground

  • dimitri588 Aug 21, 2010

ok, we are getting close. If you replaced everything from battery-ignitor-spark plug cable-spark plug. Then it can only be the feed wire. The source starts at the ignition key. Did you measure the resistance from the ignition key wires to the generator?

Check all ignition system circuit components; coils, secondary leads, plug caps, pick-up coils, ignition switch, on/off switch, sidestand switch, clutch switch, neutral switch, all electrical connectors and wiring for defects, and chassis grounds. Maybe there are damaged wires.

Also, your bike has two coils under the tank. If you are syaing you have no spark, you should check for spark on all cylinders (you could have spark on left side, but not on the right side of engine).

You have to check the voltage going to each coil when you are trying to start. You should be reading 12v intermittently. If you're not getting that, this is telling you the current flow is not present on the side that is not working. Do you know yet if there is current from the TCI to that non working plug. Voltage there could eliminate the TCI as the problem. The other part of the system is the trigger device. That Yamaha has 1 for each coil. It is located on the crankshaft. It turns the current on and off to the primary side of those coils. This in turn charges the secondary side of the coils and causes spark across the plug gaps. If the trigger is not working then there will be no spark

It's the pick up coil.. you can check it at the plug under the tank. there will be one plug with 3 white wires on it then right next to it and wrapped together with it is a plug with two wires, one light grey and the other dark grey. check those with an ohm meter. it should read i think between 182 and 220 ohms. if its bad, it won't send the signal to tell your coils to fire the spark. Its all explained here.. http://www.650ccnd.com/coil.htm

Hi ive just got a cb900f2 boldor. It has been in a shed for 5 years, previous history unknown. The seller has put new plugs and carbs on it. It will whind over but no spark at plugs. I dont know alot...

pick ups work similar to points
The coil needs power, when the points open the coil field collapses and it sparks
With pickups they trigger the electric igniton box to do the same job as points.
if you have power to the coils, when you touch a pick up with a screw driver it should trigger a spark.
You dont often get two coils fail or two pick ups fail simutanously, but a faulty ignitor box will stop all spark.

PS (not ignition related)Check the rivets in the wheels if it has them

My ignitor keeps going out on my 83 suzuki gs 550L replaced last year and just had to again this year. I bought the bike from an older guy set up about 2 years to get it running in replaced that oil change...

my dear im having the same trouble only now i think my regulator is gone. check for wires damaged also check make sure all ur grounds are connected properly. check ur top coils and clean where they are bolted in because thats ur ground there. take off ur pick up coils in the bottom and check behind the magnets they may be slightly cracked.its worth the money to buy the manual and check ur wires. Do u have conections for parts? desperate!

magneto stator can also be a solution check for AC power from stator while cranking the motor use sta-bil winterizing fluid to insure piston where during cranking process spray directly into spak plug holes with spark plus out 4 sprays into each cylinder should be enough crank motor without plugs for reduced compression and more cranking amps

To check the Coil, pull the HT lead that comes from the coil to the dissy cap out of the dissy cap and hold close to the engine and with the ignition switch turned on earth the negative side of the coil. If there is no spark then the coil is the likely problem. If there is spark then check that the ignitor is recieving the signal from the pick-up (use an LED tester at the ignitor plug) the tester should blink as you crank the engine over. If the tester doesn't blink then check the output of the pick-up at the plug on the side of the dissy, if still no blink then check the pick-up clearance. If it blinks at the dissy and not at the ignitor the check the wires/plugs for breaks. If it blinks at the ignitor and there is still no spark then the ignitor is the likely fault.

www dot desatech dot com is a parts distributor for reddy heat products. on their main page they have a short troubleshooting guide. the motor needs to provide 3.5 psi of air across the fuel nozzle to suck the fuel out of the reservoir. check your ignition source (spark plug, hot surface igniter) if the hot surface igniter is broken get a new one, if the spark plug don't spark, check the gap might be too big. see if the spark plug is grounded. poor grounds will cause intermittent sparking. check the high voltage wire for breaks in the insulation, might be shorting out to ground BEFORE the plug. gap should be 75 thousandths.
