To replace the final drive belt on your RK is not a small job. You must first take off the foot board on the left side of the bike. drain and remove the outer primary cover, take loose and remove the engine sprocket, primary chain, and clutch assembly, remove the exhaust system, remove the starter, remove the inner primary cover, take the rear wheel out from under the bike, and take the swing arm off.

So, as you can see, it's not a small job by any means. That's why it cost so much to have the dealer do this.

Hi Anonymous, my guess is probably with minor modifications if any maybe. The 03 fender would fit a 01 and 02. The 2000 would fit a 99 Good luck

How do I replace the drive belt for my 2003 XLH 1200 Sportster?


Replacing the final drive belt on the Sportster is simple compared to the the Big Twins. All you have to do is disconnect the rear brake master cylinder and take the front pulley cover off. Then take the rear wheel off and the right side shock. Put the new belt on and reassemble the bike. No problem.

Replacing the final drive belt is a major job. You'll have to drain and pull the entire primary including the inner primary cover, the entire primary drive, and starter. You'll also have to remove the rear wheel and the swing arm to replace the belt. There are some special tools that you will need especially if you have to pull the front belt pulley to check it for wear or to replace any seals that may be leaking. If you plan on doing this job yourself, I'd highly recommend the purchase of a service manual. It's not a small job.

From what I've experienced, the average life of a final drive belt on the pre-2000 models is about 50K miles. Now, Harley is using a much narrower belt. I'm not sure if your 2000 model RK is equipped with the narrower belt. There are three things that will result in premature failure of the final drive belt, abnormal wear due to misalignment of the pulleys or improper adjustment procedures, extreme abuse due to "hot rodding" of the bike, or improper installation procedures being employed. If you say the pulleys are properly aligned and you're not "hot-rodding" the bike, it could be the way whoever is installing the belts. In the box that the belt comes in, there is a sheet of paper that tells the installing mechanic that the belt must not be bent in a tighter radius than about four inches. If you do this, the internal cords of the belt are damaged and it will result in premature breakage. But, most of the belts that I've replaced needed replacement due to age and mileage. Without seeing one of your old belts, it's impossible for me to say what might be the problem on your bike.

The voltage on a 2003 roadking battery is 12volts nominal. 13.8 volts DC on charge. 10 amps.

Belt pulley bolts are working loose whats the torque specs


Seems like I answered this one before but I'll answer it again. The Fat Boy did not come with a belt drive primary from the factory. But, just in case you have a belt drive primary, the engine nut at the front primary drive torques to 150-165 foot pounds. The nut on the clutch torques to 60-80 foot pounds left handed. The large front final drive belt pulley torques to 125-150 foot pounds, left handed. You'll need a special tool to hold the front final drive belt pulley to prevent it from turning while applying the torque. Use locktite 271 red on all nuts.

On the front final drive belt pulley, take it off and look inside the pulley and inspect the small splines. If they're worn, the pulley needs to be replaced. Torquing instructions usually comes with the new pulley. They say torque the pulley to 50 foot pounds and then 1/2 hex or something like that. I've seen people have problems with this procedure. If you want to use this procedure, first torque the pulley to 100 foot pounds and then loosen the nut leaving the pulley where it is. Then, follow the instructions that come with the pulley. I've seen the pulley reach the 50 foot pounds of torque before it was fully back against the spacer giving a false torque reading. Needless to say, it will come loose if this happens. Good Luck

2003 dyna wide glide, after engaging clutch, upon release nothing happens


Are you saying that with the engine running, you pull in the clutch lever, put the transmission in gear, release the clutch lever, Nothing happens?

If so, Look and see if your final drive belt is still on the bike. When the belt breaks, they just run out onto the road and you have nothing to drive the rear wheel with. It'll do it and you won't notice it except that the bike will no longer move under it's own power.

Now, if the belt is still on the bike, it could be the front final drive belt pulley has gone bad. The pulley is made of cast iron and is much softer metal than the final drive gear of the transmission. As a result, the pulley wears rather than the gear. If the gear wore, the time and cost of repair would be much greater than replacement of the pulley. The splines unside the pulley where it goes on the final drive gear may have worn and stripped out.

These are the two most likely problems. Check these out and if you don't find your problem, repost on this forum with what you have learned. Good Luck!
