Look on the left side of the bike down below the battery box. There is either a tee or a hose that plugs onto a knob of the frame. It there is a tee there, there will be a plug in the hose. If the hose simply plugs onto a knob on the frame, it'll be a hose that looks like just goes into the frame. Which ever it is, it will be located between the bottom of the battery box and the lower part of the primary cover. I can't remember exactly what year is where but it's in there somewhere.

Good Luck

1988 1200 sporster i hear tapping in rocker box sounds like therre loose also when first started misses on one cyclender after one minute runs fine

Sounds like you have a bad hydraulic lifter. It's acting like a solid lifter with too much clearance until it pumps up with oil.

Want to service my 1200 sporster what kind of oil do l use and how much

Your Sportster uses three quarts of oil with an oil change. Do not overfill. As to what brand of oil, of course H-D makes the best for your bike. But, if you like Mobil, try Mobil V-Twin. Amsoil, Royal Purple, and RevTech makes oil suitable for your bike. The viscosity is normally 20W50. If you wish to use something else, check the oil manufacturer's website for compatibility and suitablility of use in your Sportster.

The left front fork of my 1200 Sportster is leaking oil. How can I fix this?

That depends on where it's leaking. If it's leaking down at the axle, You can lift the bike off the ground, remove the front wheel. There's a bolt in the very bottom of the tube. Take the bolt out and slide the "slider" off the upper tube. While you have it off, replace the seal at the top of the "slider". This will fix any leak at the top of the slider. Clean the lower slider with clean mineral spirits and allow it to dry. Then, put a little bit of oil on the seal and a dab of clear RTV in the area where the copper washer goes and slide the slider back up on the tube. Put the bolt in and tighten it up. Replace the front wheel. Now, add the appropiate amount of fork oil for a "dry" refill. If you call the dealer, they should tell you how much oil goes in there. My manuals are not up to date for your model. Mine only shows for 1994 and Harley may have changed the fork tubes since then. Remember the higher viscosity of the oil, the stiffer the front suspension. The dealer will also tell you what oil came in the front forks from the factory.

Replace speedometer cable

First: you unscrew the cable housing assembly from the back of the speedomiter housing. Second: you pull the speedomiter cable from the housing. If the cable is broken inside the housing you must unscrew the housing from the spedomiter adaptor on the front axle,. at this point you should be able to pull the broken end from the adaptor with a pair of pliersif you can't pull it at this point you will have to pull the front axle and take the adaptor out and try to remove the broken end. I hope this helps.

Oil blow out the breather

An overfull oil tank will do it. Even if not overfull just about all harley's will blow oil out the air filter. Unless there is a bunch of oil coming out, it's not a problem What I've found is that the air filter eventually gets saturated and then starts to leak through. The level in the oil tank doesn't seem to matter. If you change the air filter the problem goes away, until the new one gets saturated and then it starts all over again. My plan is to get a K&N air filter, which you can clean yourself and save having to buy a new air filter every 4,000 miles or so.
