The way the solenoid it designed, the starter gear MUST engage the ring gear in order for the starter to start turning. The plunger inside the solenoid has to go all the way forward in order to make electrical contact to start the motor.

Now, that doesn't mean that the starter gear WILL turn the engine. It sounds like you've got a bad "over running" clutch. When these units go bad, you can hear the starter motor running but the engine is not turning over.

Now, here's the rub on that. If you have the abilitiy to remove the starter, disassemble it, and replace it, you can save yourself some money. If not, you're better off simply replacing the starter.

The part cost about $100 but the time it takes to put it in will quickly eat up any savings you might have by repairing the starter rather than replacing it. Labor rates are high these days.

Good Luck

Starter spins, but why doesn't it engage flywheel?

Hi, Roy the starter drive/Bendix is a mechanical gear driven component that engages the clutch pack ring gear to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced. Hi Anonymous, it sounds the like starter drive/clutch has gone south, it has components inside, that when spinning, centrifugal forces cause them to grab or lock into permanently fixed counterparts. The gear only spins one way and locks the other way. If you have one that spins both ways it has failed and needs to be replaced. Please visit the web site below for more help and good luck.
